 | Laos Restaurants | Tips 91 - 100 of 145 | | Here we are (Kamna, Rebecca, Shaz and myself) at our 'local' in Luang Prabang. I wish I could tell you the name of the place but I can't say that I ever knew! Even so, this table was not really part of their regular dining area, but when we asked to sit here, they were very kind with bringing down all necessities - the table was on a rickety platform hanging over the Mekong. It was a great vantage point from which to watch the sunset, and also got very dark and quiet afterwards. We could just sit back and enjoy some refreshment with a chorus of geckos and rat rustlings in the background. I loved it! We spent every evening here and at the end, the friendly owners just brought down our beers without us even asking. It was fantastic!
Beer Lao!! Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: Luang Prabang, over the Mekong...you'll have to scour the riverbanks to find it, sorry! They did have a normal river/road side restaurant and shop as well.

Generally expensive as compared to the products they offer. Eat as much local food at the small kitchens on the street. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

When it comes to great meals in great locations, there is little to beat dinner at the Mixai open-air restaurant on the bank of the Mekong at Vientiane. Don't be put off by the fact that Mixai used to be called the Russian restaurant - it was the only place Soviet aid workers and advisers could afford to eat when they were in Vientiane - but settle down at a table, order some spicy food and a cold beer and watch the sun dip gently over Thailand across the river. The music tends to be classic 1960s and 1970s stuff. One night when old Cliffie was there, a drunk Dane was strutting his Mick Jagger walk to the sounds of 'Satisfaction'. Theme: Other

Because my dad lived in Laos for a while i know all the best haunts in Vientiane, but whilst i was travelling nothing beat this restaurant in luang prabang. cheap food, cheap beer, cheap sticky rice. but all good. oh yeah and all the lao politicians go there to get wasted.
uhh the curry. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: second story place in Luang Prabang (facing that big floating pub boat).

Because of my appointments with Lao Tourism and at the National Museum, I stayed and mostly ate at my hotel, the Lao Plaza near the soccer stadium. Food was good, service very quiet but efficient (almost too efficient). Theme: OtherAddress: In the Lao Plaza HotelOther Contact: I only remember it is near the s

I don't remember (and I wouldn't want to influence anyone anyways) but, generally, the food in Laos is great. From French-influenced cuisine in the capital of Viangchan (Vientiane) to the local noodles, rice, and abundant vegatables of the tribal peoples (Meo, Red Tai, Black Tai, Akha, and so on), the food in Laos is great, healthy, and will be the highlight of your trip -- guarranteed.
Too many to list here but I preferred the local noodles and spicy 'curry-style' pastes and soups that were available. And, what mean could be complete without a Beer Lao or a shot of Mekong 'whiskey'.... Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: Everywhere you look. If you are adventurous, get out into the towns and villages and you will find yourself the centre of Lao hospitality in no time.

Try local noodle soup with sticky rice biscuit, very low table and chair. Try they home make chili sauce, spicy and tasty and I saw some one had two bowls. And yet cheapest in LP. Leave a Comment Theme: DinerAddress: Near to the Post Office and the Fountain, LP

Excellent and everywhere, as in most South East Asian countries. Lao and Thai cuisine are similar in many ways. All kinds of vegetables, pork, chicken, duck, beef, fish are combined with rice or noodles. Lemon grass, mint, coriander, chilies, tamarind, onions, garlic create the spicy taste. Fermented fish mixtures are often used for seasoning. Most tropical fruits from durian to watermelon are available on the markets. French bread (baguette) is sold in the morning, excellent for breakfast or in combination with fresh salad. I really liked the Papaya-saled! Leave a Comment Theme: Local

You must try the local beer - Beer lao. The reason every traveller wears the T-Shirt is because it's a fine brew to cool the head in the hot climate. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

If you make it to Phonsali (and i reccomend you do), there is a great no-name restaurant accross the street from the Phongali Hotel. Nothing obviously special - typically lao place wich os dark inside but open in the front. nice place to sit and watch the world go by.
Buffalo meat (yes, buffalo meat) with garlic and tomatoes. unbelievably good. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
