Restaurants in Luang Phabang

by SirRichard

In Luang Phabang's main street there are several restaurants for tourists, with simple but nice terraces from where you can see people pass by. They are cheap, but you can get cheaper ones as you get far from the main street. I met a monk in Luang Phabang and wanted to invite him for lunch but he told me ha had NEVER been in a restaurant. He had some free time now and then out of the monastery, but had always eaten there or at home, and refused my invitation, saying that he was "too shy" to enter a restaurant!

Liquors

by SirRichard

I found these liquors "shop" in one of the visits along the Mekong River, on the way to the buddhist caves near Luang Phabang. If you hire a boat to do that tour, they will stop in several touristic villages. This one was called "the liquor producers village" and they offered varied liquors bottled in glass with lizards, snakes... inside. Didn't try it, but some people bought bottles, it must be strong as hell!!

Laap

by SirRichard

I tried this typical laos dish in a terrace in Vientiane. It is made of chopped meat, chicken or duck finely chopped, with spices and broth. It normally comes with a plate of plain rice. But be careful! This dish is REAL FIRE!! I never tried such a spicy hot dish... and I like hot curries!!

Noodle Shop Beside Loas Wildside and Many Chan GH: Luang Namtha - Rice Noodles for Breakfast

by bkoon

I had breakfast at this noodle place a couple of times. I was glad I tried the food there. They serve very delicious beef rice noodles soup, accompanied with a huge serving of salad vegetables (local style). Order a Loa Coffee too. It is nice. They will also serve warm Chinese tea.Cost of a meal including noodles, vegetables, coffee and chinese tea : 8,000 KIP

Most Restaurants: Drinking Coffee in Laos

by bkoon

I am not kidding when I say Loas has the BEST coffee. I tasted the BEST COFFEE in Laos. Unforgettable. The aroma and the texture when I sipped the coffee. Hmm… fantastic. When you place an order at a restaurant in Laos, make sure you tell them you want Lao Coffee with Sweetened Milk. If you do not indicate you want the local coffee, they will usually provide you with the 3-in-1 Nescafe. If you do not like to drink it hot, order the ice-coffee. It will be as good.In some places, when you order coffee, they will provide you with a glass of diluted Chinese tea. I guess this is how coffee is drank in Laos.

Noodle Stall: Huay Xai – Tasty Rice Noodles for Breakfast

by bkoon

On the left of the main street as you walk up from the boat landing / checkpoint, a few shops down, you will see a noodle shop. They serve tasty rice noodles.I had it for my breakfast. Good stuffs. I paid 5,000 KIP for a bowl.

Huay Xai - BAP Guesthouse Restaurant

by bkoon

Food is available at the BAP Guesthouse Restaurant too. Although I did not eat there, there are a handful of travelers eating there. I flipped through the menu and it has a wide range of food. It is easy to get there. From the boat landing / checkpoint, walk all the walk up to the main road, turn to your left and you can see it.Breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even tea.

Not Put: Huay Xai - One of the Better Restaurants

by bkoon

Snuggly located, the Not Put restaurant is one of the better restaurants in Huay Xai. Food is reasonably priced with some kinda warm ambience to the place. There are small little huts where you can take your pick. If not, the main restaurant area is fine too. They serve nice Thai and Lao food. They only open for lunch and dinner. If you feel like eating there at 4pm, you are better off eating somewhere else.

BeerLao – Local Beer

by bkoon

BeerLao is a local beer which is popular among the Lao people and travelers alike. It is very cheap. Standard price for a big bottle of beer is :8,000 KIP (less than US$1)They do not normally have small bottles. Only cans but only in major cities.
