About food in Laos

by Marlene_swe

In Vientiane they have lots of restaurants! Indian restaurant, Thai restaurants, Lao restaurant, French, Italian and more! They even have a Scandinavian Bakery there! All the food is very cheap, just drop in at any restaurant and you will eat like a king at a cheap price there! Lao food is spicy and hot! Be careful to eat their chili, I happened to eat one! One restaurant also served grasshoppers as starters... could you eat that? lol! The brave one should try their grasshoppers and chicken knees! Their sticky rice as you eat with your hands is very good. I can recommend you to try the sticky rice.Their spring rolls are very good too. They serve the spring roll with a big leaf on the plate. You wrap the spring roll in the leaf and eat it with the leaf.

Churros

by SirRichard

Yes, believe it or not, I found CHURROS in Laos!! I couldn't believe it at first, thought they would be something else, but then I tried them and wow, they tasted like real churros, and they are served for breakfast too, so...You can find them in any breakfast place, they are on a a tray on the table, you just take as many as you want and afterwards tell it to the cashier. I took a few for the bus too, so happy I was to have found them!!!

Breakfast by the Mekong (Luang Phabang)

by SirRichard

One of the best eating experinces I had in Laos was having breakfast by the Mekong shore in Luang Phabang. There they have some nice quiet terraces where you can have a good breakfast (coffee with milk, croissant, fruit, bread, juices...) for a bit more than 1 USD.If you go early in the morning you will be alone, in silence, accompanied only by the monks that go out of their monasteries to ask for charity at the streets. From your table you can see the rushing of the local boats in the morning and how they cross the mighty river, full of streams and whirlpools.

Indochine: Local Food

by jmmorgan

A nice restaurant with very fast service. The menu had descriptions of the food in English and we were totally spoilt for choice as to what to order. It all sounded so delicious. When the food arrived the portions were good and the quality of the food was excellent.Seemed popular with budget travellers.Reccommended

Nang Khambang: The best Lao food in Laos

by AndreSTGT

Well i'm not sure if it's the best, but the simple Nang Khambang was my favorite Lao restaurant in the country, and even dirt cheap. The grilled quail with sticky rice and chili sauce was delicious... ... but the salad with raw marinated beef was truly to die for.Mains are around 15.000kip (1,60€)

Le Safran: Fancy a French dessert?

by AndreSTGT

Michelle, an English girl i met in Muang Sing, told me about this place and insisted that i go there and try the chocolate soufflé. So i went. O.k, i have to admit that it was not as divine as she promised, but still, for people who have spent many weeks in Asia this might be heaven. They also have crêpes and ice-cream.

Fujiwara: Sushi in Vientiane

by AndreSTGT

I have to admit that i'm addicted to sushi, and if you have the same "problem" this is the place to go. The quality is very high, but it's ridiculous to spend 15$ for a sushi platter in Laos. But what the hell, i enjoyed it!

Sabaidee Restaurant: Interesting food in Vang Vieng

by AndreSTGT

They offer an interesting mixture of Asian and Western food and their milk shakes are to die for (mango, coffee-banana).Delicious spring rolls.Very moderate prices! I really enjoyed the spaghetti with coriander pesto and onion baguette.

Several: Dining at the Mekong in Luang Prabang

by AndreSTGT

There are many atmospheric places on the shore of the Mekong in Laos. Many of them have bamboo terraces overlooking the river and you sit on mats on the floor. The food is cheap and Ok, but you don't come here for the food, but to enjoy the atmosphere and have a beer.

Nazim's: Work that curry section of the menu!

by TravelurX

Nazims is a bit crowded at times but they have a wide variety of items on the menu, and they all are good. I was travelling with a vegetarian and she found several items she liked which were pretty good. The chicken curries were good, and I especially liked the red curry. As I mentioned above there was a red curry, that may not have been strictly Indian because I saw it in other cafes upcountry but it was delicious. The spices were complex, the heat just about right and it really was probably my favorite dish in Laos.
