Laotian Cuisine

by aukjejetty

Excellent and everywhere, as in most South East Asian countries. Lao and Thai cuisine are similar in many ways. All kinds of vegetables, pork, chicken, duck, beef, fish are combined with rice or noodles. Lemon grass, mint, coriander, chilies, tamarind, onions, garlic create the spicy taste. Fermented fish mixtures are often used for seasoning. Most tropical fruits from durian to watermelon are available on the markets. French bread (baguette) is sold in the morning, excellent for breakfast or in combination with fresh salad. I really liked the Papaya-saled!

Just so that you can have nice non-genetically modified tomatoes for your meal. It is no wonder that people here are less than statuesque when they have to carry burdens like this at such as early age. Well, nutrition and genetics might have something to do with it.

Simply Me Cafe: Check em all out!

by Fudge

Set amidst bamboo walls and beautiful wooden tables and benches, with soft lighting, this roadside place was classified by a local Lao youngster as 'small but high-class'. It faces the Mekong river where there is some scrubland bush. The cafe makes a real yummy chicken rice. It's a clean cuisine, non fatty and real tasty :)They do a fantabulous Singapore rojak which adds to your taste buds. Also recommend trying out the Mekong fish!

Kua Lao: Lao Banquet

by jmmorgan

This restaurant was recommended to us. It is situated in an old French mansion and is decorated in french and lao antique style. We were unsure what to order so chose the Lao banquet meal of 15 dishes! Fortunately the portions of each dish were quite small but even so we failed to conquer it all.The restaurant was quite busy and there was a little entertainment from a group of musicians playing local instruments.

Lunch on the Nam Ngum

by fraine

Variety of Lao food and river fish. Walk out along the footbridge and eat at the floating restaurant or have your lunch served while you cruise down the river on a private bamboo raft! The prawn (shimp) salad

food stalls: Don't miss the market in Ban Nakasang

by AndreSTGT

For the best raw spring-rolls in Laos, visit this market in the village of Ban Nakasang, a ten minute boat ride from Don Det.They cost next to nothing and the locals will be very happy to sell them to you.

Kualao restaurant: Vientiane

by call_me_rhia

The restaurant is located inside a colonial villa and they serve traditional Lao dishes that: a) are delicious b) are a delight to the eyes. You pay a bit more than you would pay in a normal restaurant, but it is still a very affordable the stuffed mushrooms (that they shape like tiny turtles) with those tiny eggs from i don't know which bird. Absolutely tasty and light.

1 bakery, 2 restaurants: Luang Prabang

by call_me_rhia

The Luang Prabang Bakery is one of the 2 or 3 bakeries in Luang Prabang and cater to the tourist crowd, but their baguettes are delicious and filling. Address: 11/7 Sisavangvong Rd (main street). The Luang Prabang Restaurant is a nice simple restaurant away from the main street scene. There's also some cosy roadside table and plenty of Lao specialities on their menus, mostly for under 2 $. On Wisunalat Rd.Cafe des arts has wooden tables on the main road, an extensive menu ranging from baguettes sanwiches to steak and paté, and about any speciality from Laos and France. On Sisavangvong Rd. Luang Prabang Bakery : bacon and cheese baguettes and heavenly mixed-fruits milkshakes.Luang Prabang Restaurant: marinated pork cooked in a sort of batter with lemongrass.Cafe des arts: the chicken mok... delicious marinated chicken cooked in what looked like a banana leaf

Bunmy restaurant: Packbeng

by call_me_rhia

it's a restaurant run by 4 bright kids aged 6-12, on a terrace overlooking the mekong river. it's a simple basic place with great food - in all fairness it did not look too hygienic - no one dared to eat meat there - but the food was really excellent - and no one was sick. Fried rice with vegetables and peanuts: one of the best I've ever had. They also make sandwiches in the morning to bring on the boat. About 1.50 $
