All over Luang Prabang: Silk

by El_Rubio

All over Luang Prabang you will find beautiful silk products. There are quite a few silk shops offering silk products from various villages up in the mountains. If you go outside to the market you will find exactly the same products but much cheaper. The interesting thing is if you continue your trip to Cambodia. There, once again, you will find identical silk products with the same pattern but now they are produced in a village nearby. Even the photos that they are showing with the silk put on a bed or sofa are the same as in Laos. Funny right? I'll bet it is all produced in China and distributed all over Laos and Cambodia. In Cambodia a silk scarf goes for 1 USD, in Laos the same Scarf is 8 USD and in Siam Square Shopping Center the price is 19 USD. Good Luck!

Everywhere

by AshleeS

Almost every family has some sort of shop outside there house depending on where you travel. In the main cities there are strips of resturants along with a few shops and internet cafes along with guest houses. Or on the side of a road in the main city we found these paintings that were absolutley beautiful next to nothing

It's a market: Vientiane Morning Market

by AshleeS

It is one huge market, we were seriously here every day. You can purchase clothing, food, knock off purses etc, shoes, jewlery, everything. It is not your typical mall in other countries. Go authentic. The silk is beautiful. We bought, scarfs, outfits, carvings, food, etc barter barter barter

Daily Night Market: Souvenirs from Luang Prabang

by bkoon

There is a daily night market along the street of the Royal Palace. It is an entire stretch where you can find all sorts of souvenirs which you can bring home. There are textiles, t-shirts, paintings, lamps, decorations, crafts, etc etc

Vang Vieng market: Vang Vieng has more local color than you think

by richiecdisc

This is a very local and authentic market and shows that even though the village is trying to become a backpacker mecca, it is still full of local color. You can buy lots of weird stuff here. I saw two small kids selling frogs with their feet sewn together! That's the frogs, not the kids. ;) Beats me about the frogs, I guess you could be nice and set them free for less than a dollar.

All over Luang Prabang: Loose Fit Style Shirts

by squidchip

All over Luang Prabang you can find nice button up shirts with great designs. Some only have 1-3 buttons at the top some button all the way. Average price is 20000-60000Kip each. Loose fit style great for the climate there. I thought I would find these all over but after leaving Luang Prabang the price went higher and quality much lower. Different styles too. Find these shirts in shops and all the markets. You could even have one had made to your specs on the fabric you pick. Most run from the basic at 20,000K to more elaborate 80,000K

anywhere in Laos, but preferably not in Vientiane: buy silk in Laos

by tommy_oostende

You can buy traditional silk in laos in every market, silk tissue or silk traditional clothes in all colous and shapes, very cheap. The quality of the tissue and clothes is exceptional and the prices often ridiculous (except in Vientiane in the morning market, where they charge more but have a wider range of choice). The cheapest places to buy are Ponsavan, pakse or any less touristy laotian middlesized town.

Small village outside town: Hand Made Paper

by jmmorgan

Our guide took us to a small village about 15mins outside of town. There we saw a small workshop where they were making paper. It was fascinating. Some of the pages have leaves embedded in them. I bought some small notebooks. The quality was excellent and they were about 3$ for two. They were easy to carry and make a beautiful gift or to use as an authentic travel journal.

paper and fabric

by utttz

I guess paper and fabric is the thing to buy here. Some time decoration has an astonishing similarity to the peruvian style.. usually you'd better trade. A few people is speaking english so you'll probably caught in the CALCULATOR TRADING. type your price, hand over the calculator, laugh, new price, your turn... your price, another laugh, the calculator is shown to other people, new price...
