Petanque

by planxty

Undoubtedly a hangover from the French colonial influence in the area, petanques (also called boules in France) is widely played and greatly enjoyed. For those of you unfamiliar with the game, a small ball, usually made of wood, is thrown out on a rectangular pitch (normally about 20 yards long). The players then take it in turn to throw metal balls about the size of a cricket ball and the player with the ball(s) nearest to the small ball sores accordingly. I am sure I am not explaining this very well, so hopefully the attached website will assist, should you be interested. If you show any sort of interest at all, you may be invited to join in a game as I was in the small village of Banchene, at least I think that was the name, there were no signs, on the far bank of the Mekong from Luang Prabang. If you are offered, I recommend you join in, it is great fun and not overly difficult to...

Kayaking

by mfwagner

We went Kayaking with other backpackers - Brits, South Africans, Germans, Dutch, Swedes, Kiwi and Canadians. It was a lot of fun but we flipped and drank a lot of river water - and we ended up getting Giardia AGAIN.

hiking in Vang Vieng

by richiecdisc

Vang Vieng offers lots of great hiking opportunites. You can do some guides walks in caves, wander the countryside or even climb some rocky outcroppings for great views. Sturdy boots are essential for anything beside a country stroll. The rocks are sharp and sandals are not really appropriate no matter how hot it is.

volleyball!!!!

by utttz

I was caught in a volleyball match somewhere in the forest... each team was made by three player... laos against the rest of the world. the rest of the world was me, a german guy and a dutch girl all taller than 1.80 metres... I guess the laotian player were all below 1.55: a genocide, not a game! anyway as all the people involved was there to play and not to win we had a great fun! actually it seems the laoteam was happy to deal with so many smash. just wear in a decent lao way.. and forget any kind of competitiviness... just play to have fun
