Nam Ou River by bkoon **********ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING THINGS WHICH I EXPERIENCED IN LAOS********** No kidding. This is one of the most amazing things which I experienced during my stay in Laos. The Nam Ou River was just so fabulous and no regrets at all to make my way down just to travel from Muang Khua and southwards as I make my way down to Luang Prabang. Due to some reasons, I could not get the slowboat down and I had not choice but to take a speed boat. It was a scenic and rewarding journey. I bet anyone who travelled that route feels the same. In any case, I shall attempt to describe the scenery there. It was like the Guilin of China at some parts, and as the boat moved on, the moutains on the 2 sides of the river ahead of me seemed to open up and there were some nice caves along the way. P.S.: I will be describing more about travelling on a speedboat in my Transportation Tip. Leave a Comment Address: Nam Ou River

Village Kids by bkoon On the way back from Kuang Si Falls to Luang Prabang, the tuk-tuk driver stopped at one of the Hmong villages. Well, the village is quite touristy from the fact that there were stalls selling souvenirs, "sticky" kids clinging on you asking you to buy souvenirs, etc. Well, it was quite nice walking into the village to explore the place. Watching the Sunset Here by bkoon As I was staying at the Le Jardines de Vang Vieng which is situated next to the Nam Song River, it was a nice place to watch the sun goes down. All you need to do is to sit on the restaurant bench, order a BeerLao, relax and stare into the sky. Leave a Comment Address: Vang Vieng

Trek to the Villages by bkoon Trekking is a definitely MUST DO when you are in Muang Sing (or Luang Namtha if you do not have the chance to get to Muang Sing). The experience I had was amazing and I shall be describing more about it in my next few tips. Where to sign-up for treks? The tourist information centre. The centre is currently located few alleys from the left of the bus station. Just follow the signage. In no time, the centre will shift to one of the shoplots along the main street, also on the left of the station. What type of treks? There are a variety being offered by the information centre, ranging from 1 day to 3 days trek in the area. The main highlight of the treks is about getting to know about the various ethnic groups. For the 3-day trek which I did, I visited many Ahka and Hmong villages and even experienced living with them. Anyway, the 3-Day trek was priced at US$34, which included an English-speaking local guide (usually someone from the ethnic village), accommodation, all meals and local transport. No fireflies Pix... scene @ bus station by bkoon Back home in Malaysia, fireflies are hard to come by. There are only a few places where I could see fireflies. In Laos, especially in Luang Namtha, fireflies are everywhere. I was so excited when I saw the fireflies as I was walking down the street in Luang Namtha at night. They are everywhere. [I saw a lot of them when I walked to the Herbal Massage Place where Panda Restaurant was previously.] Leave a Comment Address: Everywhere, Luang Namtha

Muang Ngoi's Boat Landing by bkoon From Muang Khua, I reached the much-talked-about Muang Ngoi after a short speedboat trip along the Nam Ou River. I was in Muang Ngoi for only a short while as I need to leave for Nong Khiaw the very same day. My first impression of Muang Ngoi was that the place was packed with tourists. In the river, there were tourists tubing, fishing, swimming, bathing, etc. There are many guesthouses there for you to pick and choose. Many travelers chose to stay there for as little as a couple of days to as long as a few weeks or even months. Leave a Comment Address: Muang Ngoi

View of Pak Ou Caves from Other Side of River by bkoon There are several alternatives on how to get there. When you are in Luang Prabang, you will see many advertised tours to Pak Ou Caves. Alternative 1 : Sign-up for the tour (40,000 - 50,000 KIP per pax) Alternative 2 : Charter your own tuk-tuk in the streets (80,000 - 100,000 KIP per tuk-tuk) Alternative 3 : Take a boat from Luang Prabang's boatlanding I took a tuk-tuk there. The tuk-tuk dropped me at the other side of the caves whereby I would need to take a boat across to the caves. It cost me 10,000KIP for the return boat ride if I do not remember wrongly. The boatman will wait for you to finish your tour before sending you back. There are 2 restaurants overlooking the Pak Ou Caves and I recommend that you drop by for a cold beer after your tour of the caves. Chill out! Leave a Comment Address: Pak Ou

the best destination in SE Asia? Perhaps by richiecdisc We were wandering the streets of Luang Prabang one fine afternoon when a fellow traveler offered up this unsolicited tidbit of information: Luang Prabang is the greatest place in Southeast Asia! She evidently felt confident as she had been traveling around the region for years. Not sure if her lofty assertion will stand the test of time but at THAT time, we had to agree. We just loved this peaceful oasis. The natural scenery was gently beautiful, the sights enchanting and the people very friendly. The best part was the relative lack of other tourists. There is a lot to see and great places to stay and eat. It is cheap to boot. Check out my Luang Prabang for more details. Leave a Comment Directions: Luang Prabang is pretty much in the center of Laos and a hub for travel around the country so hard to avoid even if you mistakenly wanted to.

Nam Ou River by bkoon ~ HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ~ Yes! I highly recommend a trip to Muang Khua, just for the Nam Ou River. When I first stepped onto Muang Khua, the place gave me a totally different feel. I felt I was transported back to many many years ago. When I saw the Nam Ou River, it was gorgeous. I thought I was in some European city as I totally did not expect that such beauty can be seen in Asia. I was very impressed. It was nice just sitting by the Nam Ou River in Muang Khua and observing the activities there. I missed the time when I was chilling out with a bottle of BeerLao as the sun sets. Have I found my Shangrila? Leave a Comment Address: Muang Khua

Luang Prabang - French-Style Buildings by bkoon Serene. Tranquil. Attractive. Allure. Rustic. Luang Prabang, the capital of Laos in the olden days. Despite the fact that Luang Prabang is very well touristed, its charms and appeal will always be there. Somehow, this place is special. Anyone who goes to Laos must make a visit to Luang Prabang. There are various places of interest within the town as well as a couple of places which are nearby. A minimum or 3-4 days should be allocated to Luang Prabang. I am sure you will also fall in love with Luang Prabang. Leave a Comment Address: Luang PrabangDirections: North of Vientiane
