Laos Tourist Traps

  • Whiskey Village Silk Scam

We took a trip up the Meekong to the Pak Ou Caves a truly beautiful and revered destination while staying in Luang Prabang.However... after thinking we were supporting the locals through buying their 'home weaved' silk. While they have silk looms there and the stall owners can showcase how to weave silk, it's in our opinion and of a professional...

  • if you're going to Lao...

keep an open mind. People are trying to move up. Some people tend to want fast money, so that's when tourists get ripped off. If you want to avoid that as much as possible, don't look like a tourist. lol. But if you insist on staying in Lane Xang Hotel or Don Chan Palace...expect to be prey. yeah it's sad, but accept it. if you're not fit to handle...

  • Children of Laos

Not sure that htis is a warning or trap. There are lots of children in Loas that flock to the tourists when they arrive at food stops etc many of them have even smaller children in their care. They are ususlly begging and will hang around while you eat. We never gave them money but we often handed out fruit which they seemed grateful for. At some...

  • say NO to VIETIANE-HANOI bus!!

say NO toward it!! the bus condition was suck and u need to stay several hours in the border of Laos - Cao Treo to wait for the opening of the office!!typically this bus ticket can be purchased in every agency and guesthouse in VIETIANE... it can cost u 16 - 18 US dollar and end up with a nightmare!so, just say No to this bus service! for border...

  • Slow Boat "Insurance" Scam

If you take the slow boat from that goes from the northern part of Thailand to Luang-prabong some of the operators will try to get you to pay a 50 bahtt fee for "insurance" They even have a semi-offical looking form that you have to fill out. It's a scam. Don't be the one to pay the money. Be the leader to stand up an proclaim it a scam. They...

  • Weekend Border Charge

Having just come through the border from Lak Xao into Vietnam, there was a sign saying that as it was the weekend, there was a charge of 1 USD for stamping the passport to exit the country. Of course this was repeated by the Vietnamese to enter. So total extra cost because its a weekend is 2 USD. Not much I know but worth knowing!! Smile and...

  • The Zoo

Night Time at the Zoo..... It's not all that great , since you can not photograph what you see. It was also a very long line, and really you are not seeing anything up close and personal that you could not do during day time. We took local bus , and it was a LONG way to travel , for something you can see at any Zoo.

  • not nearly the thieves of Thailand

If you want to travel from Northern Thailand into Laos via boat, there are things you have to be careful of. First off, do not buy your tickets in Thailand as they are very overpriced. The best thing to do is go into Laos before buying your ticket and do not buy it at the border either, despite what the apparent border guards tell you. The...

  • Scam

Before you tak your slow boat to Luang a man might suggest that he help you organise a guesthouse before you arrive in pak beng . He will probabaly say that there are only limited guest houses and many toursts and will ask for 5 dollars and he will organise it for you. this is rubish as there are always vacancies and the guesthouses on average cost...

  • The Patuxai

The Patuxai, an arch of triumph in Vientiane, is shown on postcards, brochures etc...But it's really a piece of kitsch, built recently with cement left behind by Americans building an airbase during the Vietnam war (the locals call it the vertical runway).Just drive by, take a snapshot and move on.

  • Mahaxi - Getting there scam

We arrived in Thathek bus station which is situated on the main highway. We asked for prices to get a ride to Mahaxai one way as we were going to follow the road north from there to Lak Sao.We were offered a ride for 10,000 kip each (There are 2 of us) this was agreed by all.We did think it was cheap but were unsure of distances so....Once arriving...

  • Dont go to Vientiane.

Just skip this city as it has nothing to do with Laos. You sill die of heat and have to sleep in an auful place for the same price you where sleeping at a beautifull place in LP. Try to fly directly to LP after landing in Vientiane.

  • Buddha Park

I can't decide if this is a tourist trap or not. Buddha Park is a few km past the Friendship Bridge coming from Vientiane Laos. The small park houses many strange Buddha statues. All were built since the 1950's. It is a nice setting to walk around. It is along the Mekong with Thailand on the other side. I only spent about an hour there. I probably...

  • Kang Si Waterfall

A local told me that some where in May 2002, few portial of the waterfall structure was collapse. So, now the waterfall do not look a like what we see like the postcard but still worth to visit. Rent a taxi from LP cost around US10.

  • The market in Luang Prabang....

The market in Luang Prabang. This isn't so much a tourist trap as a non-event, unless you're into paying too much for frayed textiles. Or unless you'd like to buy pot or opium, both of which will likely be offered to you.

  • The caves near Wat Chom Phet...

The caves near Wat Chom Phet (across the Mekong from Wat Xieng Thong). There's no lighting so unless you bring your own flashlight, you won't be able to see much. A much, much better bet is a half day trip to the Pak Ou Caves.

  • Not so easy to find Cheap Hotels in...

For backpackers, in Savannakhet it is not so easy to find cheap hotels. You have to spend more time looking around, and surely you'll find some very nice family-hold hostels. This is a tank left in the war near the Mekong River.

  • On the Mekong river tour from...

On the Mekong river tour from Thailand you stop for 20 minutes in Laos at some souivoneers villiage. Could not see much.

  • If you want to do a trip from...

If you want to do a trip from Luang Prabang into the Country side to the Watherfalls 'Kuang Si' or to Pak Ou, be carefull, Guides tend to overcharge most of the pax. For a trip to Pak Ou, don't pay more than USD 15, the same for the trip to the Watherfalls. Near the market at Luang Prabang there is a big sign with prices for different trips, this...

  • We stayed at the Lane Xang...

We stayed at the Lane Xang Hotel in Vientiane. We wanted to take a TukTuk to Tha Deua for the Friendship Bridge. The bell man informed us that we would have to pay 300 Baht. Well, I walked outside of the hotel and asked a guy, he told me he will do it for 200 Baht. Then the bell man from the Hotel walked to us and spoke Lao to the driver which asked...

  • Sometimes, if you want to do...

Sometimes, if you want to do something, you gotta pay the tourist price. I don't like it either, but if you don't want to pay, don't give tourists a bad name by just walking past the paypoint- instead set an example by just saying NO, I'm not going to pay and I'm not going in.

  • There wasn't much in Laos that...

There wasn't much in Laos that I could define as a 'tourist trap' other than the playful children who will instantly turn you into a moving jungle gym!

  • PAK BENG is a small town at...

PAK BENG is a small town at the banks of the Mekong. every 'slow boat' from the Thai border to Luang Prabang and other way round stops here. after dark usually. with tired tourists. the whole place is a ripp-off. rooms, restaurants, stalls.... way overpriced.

  • Have not found any. What...

Have not found any. What happens frequently however due to lack of language knowledge on both sides are misunderstandings. Be very precise and let the repeat if possible in case you book or order anything. In case you get something in writing, read it carefully.

WHEN IN THE CApital VIENTIANE do not consider hiring a moped from the only shop in town that appears to offer this service. YOU WILL DIE. i say this not unkindly or out of any animosity to the good people of laos but they are psychos and the mopeds for rent are perhaps not quite as sprightly as the day they rolled out of the factory. ours developed...

  • The Royal Palace in Luang...

The Royal Palace in Luang Prabang. It's practically stripped of interesting artifacts, though it might be worth the visit just considering the mysterious story of the 'disappearance' of the royal family. The gardens surrounding it are quite nice.
