Sometimes, if you want to do something, you gotta pay the tourist price. I don't like it either, but if you don't want to pay, don't give tourists a bad name by just walking past the paypoint- instead set an example by just saying NO, I'm not going to pay and I'm not going in.
PAK BENG is a small town at the banks of the Mekong. every 'slow boat' from the Thai border to Luang Prabang and other way round stops here. after dark usually. with tired tourists. the whole place is a ripp-off. rooms, restaurants, stalls.... way overpriced.
Have not found any. What happens frequently however due to lack of language knowledge on both sides are misunderstandings. Be very precise and let the repeat if possible in case you book or order anything. In case you get something in writing, read it carefully.
WHEN IN THE CApital VIENTIANE do not consider hiring a moped from the only shop in town that appears to offer this service. YOU WILL DIE. i say this not unkindly or out of any animosity to the good people of laos but they are psychos and the mopeds for rent are perhaps not quite as sprightly as the day they rolled out of the factory. ours developed a nasty habit of stalling in the middle of the road for no good reason which eventually caused another 'ped piloted by a local to run up our arse. he had no front brake lever and was usng his foot to stop as his back brakes didn't work anyway. anyway we gave him about $13 aust [cant remember how much it was in local kips] and his eyes told a happy tale of two more tourists being fleeced. so you have been warned, dont hire the 'peds and dont trust the local drivers any more than you would a volvo driver at home.
The Royal Palace in Luang Prabang. It's practically stripped of interesting artifacts, though it might be worth the visit just considering the mysterious story of the 'disappearance' of the royal family. The gardens surrounding it are quite nice.

You can rent bikecycle( 10k kip) and visit few good caves here. Try Khan cave and Poukham cave.
