Vientiane-Huay Xai-Vientiane

by ytanay

Given the time constraint, I had to fly to Huay Xai from Vientiane. Lao Airlines is the only domestic airline available. I'd booked all my domestic flights from their office in Malaysia. Just had to reconfirm once I reached Wattay International Airport. There's a Lao Airlines office to the left once you come out of the immigration.I was apprehensive about its timeliness and safety but it turned out to be alright in the end. Only a 2-hour delay from Huay Xai to Vientiane. There are only 3 flights per week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Flgiht schedule and price are available on their website. They've just started new flight from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang so if you don't have time to do the 2-day boat trip, you can opt to fly.Huay Xai airport is a mere 15 minutes tuk tuk ride from the town. Cost me 35000Kip.

Airport transfer - Vientiane

by ytanay

You can book a taxi to the city centre once you arrive at Wattay International Airport. Cost me USD6, i think it's standard. I read that it's cheaper if you get a tuk tuk from the street outside the airport. What i did was that i book the same taxi driver to get me from the guesthouse to the airport and he charged me USD5 instead. I also arranged for him to pick me up from the airport when i arrived from Huay Xai to Vientiane. His name is Mr Bounthone (Tom) and though he spoke little English, he turned up on time every time. Very reliable.

Lao Airlines

by stedeb

Despite all the negative advice we were given in regard to Lao Airlines in fact we even flew from Cambodia via Bangkok into Laos to avoid flying with them but we did anyway!!!! We found the airline to be pretty good efficient, clean planes, good service in fact good value for money. We decided to fly back to Luang Prabang from Vientiane as none of us fancied the long bus ride back. The cost was $US61 we just walked into the nearest travel agent in Vientiane and asked for a booking we paid with credit cards and walked away with our tickets. They must of put on an extra plane because we were booked on the 9.30am but there was another scheduled for 9.35am which was our flight number. The first flight was full to capacity filled mostly with a group of Chinese VIPs who had been in town for a conference. Our flight which left 5 minutes later only had 12 passengers 6 of which were our group!!!...

A better Slowboat-Huay Xai to Luang Prabang

by wendo

The Nagi of Mekong is a slowboat that travels from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang (1 day - about 9 hrs. on Sunday and Wednesdays) or in the other direction (2 days - Mondays and Thursdays). Travel is on a comfortable boat with seating for 25 passengers with bus like reclining chairs and lots of leg room. Lunch and refreshments are served on board. Takes a tour of the Tam Ting Caves as well. $80 U.S. You will need to arrive in Huay Xai the night before if travelling downstream as the boat leaves early. In our case, the departure is 7:30 a.m.Length: 32 meters.Width: 2.85 meters.Seats: 25 reclining seats.Leg room: 1.3 metersEngine: 330 HPs - Hino 24 valves / turboToilet: European.Safety measures: Life jacket for every passenger plus form rafts. The information will be launched on a new website which from my understanding might be in about a month's time. You can contact Adisak at the current...

Lao Airlines

by petwouters

On the internet you read: "do not travel on Lao Airlines, several planes have crashed".In the Lonely Planet you read: "embassies advise their staff to not use the airline".Peter says: "fly with Lao Airlines, it's a safe as anything, there is nothing wrong with it".I didn't listen to LP and the internet and booked anyway. Obviously, I don't know all about the airline. What I do know, is that we used the airline for a flight between Vientiane (VTE) and Luang Prabang (LPQ) and back a few days later. The flights left on time (if not early), the on board service was wonderful (but limited due to the short flight) and the pilots were obviously very professional. To say another thing on this airline: they have recently changed their name from Lao Aviation to Lao Airlines, and are trying to really improve their services. The only way that we can help them, is by using the airline. You might thing...

At the Border

by easterntrekker

From the Udon Thani airport you can take a minibus to the Friendship bridge for 100 baht. The busride takes about one hour and will drop you off at a small bus station close to the border. There you can pay 10 baht to get on another bus that will take you to Thai immigration, and over the bridge to the Laos immigration. When you cross into Laos via the Friendship Bridge, you must first fill out a visa form . Do this before lining up , go to the counter and pay .If you don't have an extra passport picture no problem , it is $1.00 extra.Quite a few people lined up and had to return to the counter on your left as you enter to pay and fill out a visa application.

Taxi to town

by easterntrekker

Once you go through customs , there are lots of taxis waiting to take you to your hotel . We shared with another couple and split the 220BHT fee between us. It takes about 30 minutes to get to town. There are tuk tuks waiting too but it's a breezy drive on the highway. At the airport there is a little travel booth where you canbook and pay for transportation to the bridge. All easy!!

Best spot on the bus

by SurfaceTravel

For those cramped painful long bus rides, the best spot to sit is up on the roof with the ticket guy. You can stretch out and lay on the gear, and you don't have to guard your seat if you leave it for a few minutes. It is against the law, but I swear the risk is worth the reward. In winter, dress warm.

Tuk Tuk

by easterntrekker

There are tuks tuks everywhere . We came to rely on them . They are great tour guides too . Our driver picked us up in front of our hotel and for 200 bht he took us around all morning , waiting outside each stop. He was happy and so were we/
