Vientiane to Thailand via the Friendship Bridge

by bkoon

This is how it goes :1. Go to the Vientiane Bus Terminal near the big market. 2. Check the bus schedule to the Friendship highway. Purchase ticket either from the counter or in the bus/mini-bus. 10,000 KIP on regular bus; approx 35 minutes3. After clearing the immigration on the Laos side, buy a ticket for the mini-bus crossing the bridge. 2,500 KIP; 8 minutes4. 3-4 minutes later, you reach Thailand's Nong Khai immigration.5. If you are getting to Udon Thani Airport, hop on to a mini-van at the Thai immigration side. 150 Baht; 1 hour approximately

Vang Vieng to Vientiane

by bkoon

Many travellers do this route too, Vang Vieng to Vientiane. As usual, you may go to the bus terminal early in the morning and hop on to any bus or truck serving that route. There shouldn't be any problem getting transport to Vientiane.I took a morning truck to Vientiane. The ride was alright but comparatively, not much scenery to see. I even had my breakfast at the stall at the Vang Vieng bus terminal before leaving. The truck stopped me at the bus station which is farther out of the town centre. I then took a tuk-tuk into town.Cost : 20,000 KIP

Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng

by bkoon

Going to Vang Vieng from Luang Prabang is extremely easy and there are many buses, mini-vans and trucks going towards the direction. For a cheaper option, you can get to the Bus Terminal which is slightly outside the town centre. If you seek convenience, you can buy tickets from any of the operators in town or get to the riverside where there is a counter selling seats on mini-vans (much more expensive).I took the mini-van. It was comfortable but the driver refused to switch on the air-conditioning despite the fact that the weather was so warm and humid.Cost : US$8.00

Muang Khua to Muang Ngoi

by bkoon

I travelled from Muang Khua to Muang Ngoi by speedboat as there is insufficient passengers for the slowboat. There is a small booth at the boatlanding area beside the river and that is where you should enquire about the boats. I was quoted 50,000 KIP for the slowboat. For the speedboat, I paid US$11 (per pax). I shared with 2 other travellers though.

Udomxai to Muang Khua

by bkoon

There are a few trucks leaving for Muang Khua from Udomxai daily. Purchase the ticket from the counter. The route from Udomxai to Muang Khua was very scenic. The truck will pass by many small villages and stopping for passengers.P.S.: The toilet at Udomxai Bus Terminal is clean.Cost : 20,000 KIP

Luang Namtha to Udomxai

by bkoon

There is a mini-bus going to Udomxai early in the morning. The schedule is available at the bus terminal. For this route, it is quite packed. So, get there early or purchase your ticket before hand. I was travelling alone, so, it was pretty easy for me to squeeze into the mini-bus.Cost : 26,000 KIP

Luang Namtha to Muang Sing

by bkoon

Getting to Muang Sing from Luang Namtha is simple. All you need is to get to the Bus Terminal and there are many trucks which run that route. The first truck leaves as early as 8am if I am not wrong. The last truck leaves around 4pm. So, if your connecting transport arrives after 4pm or in the early evening, you will need to stay a night at Luang Namtha. The journey was 1.5 hours and it would be nice if you travel in the morning when the weather is not scorching hot yet.Cost : 15,000 KIP

Biking / Cycling in Vientiane

by bkoon

In Vientiane, to travel around conveniently and efficiently, I recommend that you either cycle, if not, bike. Many poeple rent bicycles or motorcycles to move around in Vientiane as the places of interests may be some distance away.I rented a motorcycle from PVO Restaurant near Num Phu area and I found it really convenient as I got to go to more remote places easily.

Luang Prabang to Kuang Si Falls

by bkoon

Similar to Pak Ou Caves, there are many operators doing day trips to Kuang Si Falls. You can get there either by signing up with one of those operators or simply flag down a tuk-tuk on the streets. Negotiate the price. They will usually stop by a Hmong village.

Cycling in Luang Prabang

by bkoon

Touring aound Luang Prabang in a bicycle is a great idea as it is easy to cycle around and there are many people doing that. Cycling is possible, NOT motorcycle though. Last I heard was they ban travellers from riding the motorycles in Luang Prabang. Anyway, there are many operators renting out bicycles. You can check with your guesthouse too.
