fast boats along the mekong River

by call_me_rhia

Fast boats have the reputation of being dangerous. They travel very fast - from Huay Xhay to Luang Prabang they take about 9-10 hours (18 with a slow boat). fast boats are tiny - they carry about 6 passengers, and very noisy and bumpy. You are given a life-vest and a helmet to wear - and for a good reason: apparently every year several people are killed in fast-boats accidents.. tourists, too. Prices are quite high, so unless you are in a real hurry, please take the slow boat. you'll be safer and will also enjoy more the surrounding countryside

Currency Exchange. I was told to use Thai baht for all my purchases in Laos, but I wish I would've made an exchange before I left (you can also exchange cash in Laos, assuming you don't show up in the middle of the night like I did). Laos people didn't want baht at all for small purchases and I always got change in Laos kip - keeping track of the exchange rate of kip to baht was annoying, and I'm sure I always came out the worse for it.

While in Luang Prabang, my friend (aka Borderhopper) and I decided to rent a motorbike to get ourselves around. The fact that neither of us had ever ridden one seemed like a minor detail at the time. On our way to Kuang Si Falls, inexperience caught up with us. My friend must have shifted into the wrong gear or something. Before I could say 'Oh S**t', I found myself sliding along the ground. Luckily, I only suffered some minor abrasions. I saw another backpacker around town who was less fortunate. Everyone cringed at the sight of her bandaged body as she limped by. Lesson learned: get a little practice under your belt before embarking on any moto adventures!

Make sure you ask about road conditions before setting off to a new destination in laos, especially in the rainy season. most roads in the north are pretty rough and you'll want to be prepared. i saw more than one overturned truck in a ravine...

No money changer will accept Laos Kips, that's a warning hahaha. Do you believe I still have about 70,000 kips in my collection of foreign money? I have to spend it before I leave Laos, my friend told me but I forgot to spend the remaining 70,000 kips, so they are into my collection of travels. Anyway it my money warning.

in Western Laos where the majority of the cities are located there aren't many unusual hazards but once you head out into the more unpopulated eastern side be very careful of where you walk. There are still many land mines that are active here and continuing on into Cambodia. If you aren't sure don't risk it.

despite efforts of demining organisations, Laos still camps with a presence of unexploded ordenance. The best know type of this are the 'bombi': round, tennis-ball sized bombs that are easily mistaken for a toy or fruits by a child. Most areas are free of risk, but nonetheless it's still good idea to be aware of the dangers and stay on the paths.

Be careful on the roads, whether you're driving the motorbike, on the back, on a bicycle or on foot, in a car, a tuk tuk, whatever. If you're near a road, be careful, bc chances are very good that no one else is paying attention- and they're drunk as skunks.

by Jillworld

This suspension bridge seemed harmless enough when viewed from the ground - not until you are at the point of no return do you realize what a dangerous thing you are doing! The bamboo was grey and brittle, the Nam Song river far below was rocky and shallow. The man that crossed the bridge before me was quite heavy and his foot went through the bamboo at one point. Hmmm - this did not ease my jitters. It's just so different from western countries where you have to sign a waiver before doing practically anything with a remote risk. It is refreshing to have freedom to do what you choose here, but still, realize you are not invincible!
