by BorderHopper

On my trip to Luang Prabang several travellers became very sick...including myself. None of us stayed at the same place but we were all sick atthe same time. We later concluded that the bottled water we purchased in the town may have been contaminated. Check the seals and the caps carefully. This won't always prevent you from getting sick but just be cautious with your bottled water.

There have been several bombings in the Lao capital of Vientiane this past year. In one bombing a group of foreigners were injured. The bombings are believed to be the responsibility of Hmong or other ethnic minorites who haven't always been treated well by the communist government in Laos.

Riding motorbikes can also be a hazard. I personally crashed one on a mountain in central Laos. My friend who is pictured here was thrown off the back and got a pretty nice road burn from the gravel. We were lucky and wern't injured very bad. I personally was uninjured and my buddy had minor injuries but we ran into a few foreign travellers who were pretty badly scraped up from moto accidents. If you are new at riding them just be cautious and try and get in enough practice before you set out on a long road journey.

there are 'slow boats' and 'fast boats'. the fast boats are a suicide mission. there are accidents every week, which nobody is keen on teling the tourists. the slow boats are in bad condition and sink also occasionally. the difference is, you survive the slow boat. keep your passport, camera, papers... in a WATERPROOF and FLOATING bag, container, box...

Beware the Kip. That's the local currency and there's like several thousand to the USD. Change a US$100 bill and you walk around on a tilt due to the lump of Kip in your pockets. You can't change them back either, so don't change too much at once.

Border not open to foreigners in the north

by largerama

Do not try and cross to Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam at the border there unless you are Vietnamese or Laos. They will not allow foreigners to cross either way as of March 27th 2006

Dressing

by AshleeS

Wats or Temples sometimes have dress codes. It is respectful to cover your shoulders and knees.

Exchanging Money

by AshleeS

The currency is KIP. Only exchange what you need becasue once you leave Laos you will not be able to exchange KIP into any other currency.
