HK Dollars are accepted in Macau by dejavu2gb Just a another quick tip that is quite relevant. When travelling to Macau from Hong Kong, you need not change your currency from Hong Kong Dollars to Patacas. Hong Kong Dollars are widely accepted in Macau, so you dont need to change your money. The Yellow Building houses the Info Centre by sailor_p The Macau Government Tourist Office has made every effort to promote the country's tourism. It is no wonder that there are so many tourists in Macau, wherever I go - mainly from Asian countries such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. Information for tourist is easily available at hotels, airport, ferry terminals and information offices. One such information centre is housed in a beautiful, yellow, colonial building at the heart of Senado Square. All brochures / guides / maps are available at this centre. The officers-in-attendance are helpful and speak fluent English. They are able to advise you where and how to book day tours or use the local transport system. So, before you embark your historic tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, check out the information centre at Senado Square! Leave a Comment

Vinte Patacas by i-s-a In Macau, the official currency is "Pataca" or what is known as "MOP". It is available in 20, 50 and 100 denominations. It is easy to change your money here as there are many banks and money changers around town...especially in Senado Square. If you're coming from HK, you may opt to use your HK dollars as it is widely accepted in Macau. 1MOP = HKD 1.03 Leave a Comment

My mother looked as if she hit the jackpot! Chesnuts are her favorites and here in Macau she could have those as often as she likes. We had come back in this particular street vendor at Senado Square day after day to get her fill of those hot and newly roasted nuts. Of course we have it also in Bataan (imported!) but not as fresh, sweet and soft as the ones available here. She would be back in Macau if only to taste those chesnuts again ;0) Leave a Comment

by i-s-a Is Macau invaded by the Philippines? :0) Here, you can see Filipinos everywhere...from shops, hotels, churches, banks, you name it and they are there. The first encounter that we had is at the Macau Tower. We asked a Chinese-looking security guard and he answered us back in Tagalog. We were so surprised and he told us how happy he is to see fellow-kababayans visiting the place. With few encounters more, in other different places, we learned that about 80% of all security guards working in Macau came from the Philippines. The reason is that Filipinos speak English and do not demand big salaries. Please take a good look at the photo...you can see an advert there saying "Lipat Bahay" (house movers) ^0^. Leave a Comment

To get to mainland China (Gongbei,Zhuhai) from Macau is so simple. Board bus No. 3 or any other bus that says Portas De Cerco (meaning Barrier Gate). Fare is MOP2.50. and the ride is about 15minutes from Central Macau. Portas De Cerco or the Barrier Gate (gateway to China) is the last stop. If you arrive via Bus No. 3, get down at the last stop and go up the escalator to arrive at the way to checkpoint of Macau (don't worry, just follow the stream of people and you will get there). After immigration check, go down another escalator to the walkway of "no-man's land" between Macau and China to arrive at the Immigration hall to China. The foreigner queque at the Immigration into China is usually very short compared to the queques for Macau residents and mainland Chinese residents. Clearance to get into China takes approximately 1hour. After the China checkpoint, walk along to the exit of the immigration (it is actually a shopping mall ) and Now you are in China! This place is Gongbei in Zhuhai, China.
Great way to get to China - easy and quick. Can see lots of Macau residents moving in and out of China daily.

At the famous Senado Square, there is the Tourist Office. You can get lots of maps from them, but I also recommend asking for a map with walks. Everyone tell me that I could see Macau in a day or so, but there were some 4-5 walks that took me about 2 hours each. I did one or 2 walks a day, and did not see 100 pct of Macau in my 5 days stay. Nevertheless I did see as much as I could and thoroughly enjoyed the walks. So armed with the walks pamphlet, and also a booklet from the hotel, I enjoyed myself to the T. All the walks have description of what to see, and when to stop for a drink etc. It was like what I could print out from the Frommer's Walking Tour website...which I found none for Macau :( One walk took me to the Guia Hill and the surrounding., and then we took the cable car down, and visited the Sun Yat Sen Memorial house, and to another beautiful park. It was simply amazing how green Macau can be. At the park we also ran into some oldies practicing Chinese opera singing!!! Another walk took us to many churches and old Portugese buildings which led us to the A Ma temple, and we ended up with a Portugese lunch!!! And another walk took us to more churches and the famous St Paul Ruins and the museum. Leave a Comment

During our short stay in Macau, we are fortunate to experience the 13th Teochew International Convention - Gastronimia e Cultura da Regiao Chio Chao em Macau held at the Senado Square. We got to try the many delicious foods from Macau and the different provinces of the Mainland China. Leave a Comment
