We caught 3 taxis whilst in Macau and the total cost was only about $10AUD which we thought was amazing value. So they are easily the best and cheapest way to get around town if you are in Macau for a day trip. Very easy to find as well.
I was told there were 2 main "fast" ferries you can get from Hong Kong to Macau. The first one was the Turbojet which leaves from HKJ Island at Sheung Wan and the other is the New World First Ferry which leaves from China Ferry Terminal in Kowloon. I had been told that the Sheung Wan Turbojet was a better option as it had more frequent departures, and it was still very easy to get to using the MTR. We just took the MTR from TST to Central then to Sheung Wan and then a short walk to the ferry terminal. Tickets were $151HK per person, but I actually cant remember if that was one way or return. The journey will only take about one hour, but then you must clear customs and immigration on arrival in Macau, which took quite a while. For this reason YOU MUST BRING YOUR PASSPORT WITH YOU OR YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ENTRY INTO MACAU! You do not need a visa, but you do need your passport.
Getting from Macau to HK is not a problem. You can easily get to HK (either to Central or TST)for just an hour.You can easily buy ticket on the actual day you wish to travel due to many sailings.You can buy a one/two way ticket up to 30 minutes before the departure.Price range varies and time travel take 60-75 minutes to reach the destination and depends on the sea condition. There are numerous ferry companies to choose from. I got in Macau by the Macao Dragon (HK$ 134) economy which unfortunately has stopped their operation just last September 2011Going back to HK, I took the turbojet ferry (HK$ 176) economyIt's advisable to buy a return ticket if you plan to travel late at night. ferry operates at 7am-12mn.
A good way to travel from Macau to China is by boat. At Macau Porto Exterior there is connection to Shenzhen. If you want to go to Shenzhen airport, a transfer by bus is included in the price.Boat journey: about 1 hour.Fare: 172 MOP
There is an efficient bus service in Macau not only in the city but also going to the islands. On all bus stops, there are several information panels reflecting the destinations, itineraries and stops. Most of the buses have air conditioning, and esp going from Taipa to Macau, be prepared to stand the whole trip, as at times some routes got lots of passengers. For trips to the airport from Macau, catch the AP1, and it costs MOP$3.30 per person. But if you are booked on the hotels, they got free shuttles from airport or Macau ferry. Just check the concierge. For journeys around Macau the flat fare is at MOP$2.50. If you travel to Taipa (from Macau or around Taipa), it costs MOP$3.30 and if your destination is Coloane village MOP$4.00. If you go to Hác Sá you will pay MOP$5.00.
The easiest way to get to Macau, or from Macau, is by taking the hydrofoil from Hong Kong. The trip, which lasts a little over an hour, is all of HKD230 (about USD30) round trip, and allows visitors to see the Pearl River Delta and the various small islands that dot it. The hydrofoil can be a bit crowded, as this is a popular trip, but it is generally quite comfortable. The boats are rarely unsettling (I should know, I was hungover when I took the boat from HK to Macau), although they can be a bit bumpy along the way.
I didn't intend to take a ricksha, it just so happened that the "taxi" driver I thought was going to take me to the centre of Macau led me to a bike and chariot, rather than a motor vehicle. Rickshas are actually a lot of fun, in part because you get to have a leisurely tour of the route from the station to the centre of the city. The ricksha driver was friendly and stopped to get a picture of me in front of the Lisboa Casino before heading on to the historical sights. The cost is reasonable, and if you have good weather, it can be an excellent introduction to a city that requires a bit of work to warm up to.
Taking a bus around Macau is actually very easy and fun.The 2 major bus companies are Transmac & TMC.Bus fare are fix.It cost only MOP3.20 to travel around Macau peninsula and MOP4.20 if you are going to Taipa area. The fare and the routes are available around the bus-stop,so take a moment to figure out.The buses we took are Transmac and most of them have information what the next stop and which attraction are available at the next stop.So you should not be lost.
I took the First Ferry to Macau from China Ferry Terminal (Tsim Sha Tsui, HK). It cost about $40 US for a round trip. It took about 1 hour each way. I expected the ferry trip to be general seating like the Star Ferry or Seattle ferries back home, but the seating was similar to the assigned seating like in an airplane. There are designated areas for luggage and bigger bags. The seats were very comfortable and the trip was very smooth although I hear it can be quite rough when the weather acts up. There are attendants who take order for snacks and drinks or you can go to the small concession stand and get it yourself. Don't forget to fill out a Macau customs form and bring your passport. The ferry terminal in Macau is very close to the casinos and within walking distance to old town center area.
So you need to check out of your Macau hotel on/before noon but your flight is still hours away. To kill time, you might want to tour around some more while you leave your bags with the concierge. Later, once you're ready to head to the airport do the following:1) Take your hotel's free shuttle service to the ferry terminal.2) Upon reaching the terminal, look and go to the bus stop for the Venetian free shuttle.3) The shuttle drops off passengers at the Venetian hotel's West lobby. a. If you still wish to linger in the Venetian, you can leave your bags for free at the concierge of this lobby. You will be given a luggage claim stub. b.
