photograph the most famous...

by Krystynn

photograph the most famous landmark in all of Macau - the Fortress of St. Paulo do Monte. The Fort is a public park with spectacular views of St. Paul's Cathedral and the City. It also functions as a site for meteorologists to study the weather. Visitors are able to see the tracking charts and weather watching equipment here. Occupying 21,000 square feet, the Fort was constructed sometime in the 1600s by the Jesuits of Chunambo. Built on granite foundations, with brick guardrooms and cannon housings, the barracks, cisterns and storehouses are capable of sustaining a siege of up to two years! Amazed? You bet!

wander around Largo Senado or Senate Square. This area had been created by Portuguese experts in a typically traditional style found in many parts of Southern Europe. The Square features a fountain in the shape of a sphere, along with monumental plants and benches. Vehicles are generally NOT allowed into the area (which is a great idea!).... but bicycles and light vehicles are exempted from this ruling. Photo Below: The municipal buildings on Largo Senado Square here in Macau.

The so-called 8 scenes of...

by Miekleno

The so-called 8 scenes of Macau are: Old Macau-Taipa Bridge, Ama Temple, Ruin of St. Paul, Temple od Kun Iam, Guia Lighthouse, Lou Lim Ieco Garden, Taipa House Museum and Ha Sac Beach. The most exotic scene, however, is the Largo do Senado at night. The Macau Firework Festival is the most romantic event you'll ever experience.

A Cultural Mix

by keeweechic

What I loved most about Macau was the shopping. I didn't really feel a tourist there because I went so many times and I was living then relatively close in Hong Kong. I loved the furniture which was considerably cheaper than Hong Kong. I loved the old Chinese bits and pieces. The jewellery was good too. I just really loved the old Portuguese style which was so different from what I was seeing in Hong Kong every day. My visits were all prior to China taking Macau back in 1999.

Peaceful Independence

The transition from Portuguese to Chinese sovereignty was a model of cooperation. The national Chinese symbol, in a modern square, is a fair complement to the well preserved Portuguese heritage.
