fabulous! by machomikemd Most Han Chinese in Macau are Taoist or Buddhist or Confucianist. ALthough Macau was a Porugese Colony for about 400 years, Roman Catholicism failed to make inroads in it unlike in the Philippines and Vietnam and East Timor hence it is rare to see a Roman Catholic Chinese Wedding here in Macau and when you see one, it is nice to Photograph but be sure to ask the couple for permission too! The picture was taken in Penha Hill St. Mary Catholic Church

Rua da Felicidade by ahoerner This nice street in the Eastern Macau, blocks away from the Senate Square, is another off the beaten track attraction. It was the former nightlife centre in Macau, displaying today restored façades where shops and restaurants continue to flourish behind them. Here you find lots of nice shops and bakeries offering delicious cookies from Sino-Portuguese recipes… Leave a Comment

by thelittlevoice Coloane Island is about 20 minutes from Macau by bus(no. 21, 22, 25, 26A, the cost is around 4-5MOP depending on how far each bus goes to). Coloane has two beaches, Cheoc Van and Hac Sa. There's a hiking trails to the big statue of A-Ma. St. Francis Xavier church and a couple of other temples are worth visiting too. Leave a Comment

Oceanfront view from Coloane Trail by rachel_simhon Many travellers come to Macau for the gambling and restaurants downtown, and miss all of the beautiful oceanside scenery on Coloane Island, just 25 minutes away on a bus by bridge. The sparsely populated, quiet island has a somewhat "sleepy" feel to it, but it is a great place to go for a picnic or oceanside stroll. You can swim in the ocean or use the very nice, uncrowded public for MP15 at Cheoc Van Beach, then take part or all of of the Coloane Trail over to Hac Sa Beach, where there is a pier, dozens of grilled fish stalls, and the delectable Fernando's Restaurant. There you can see for yourself why the island used to be a hiding place for pirates! Leave a Comment

Zhuhai, the border custom by Amareyui If you start to feel bored in Macao, a good side trip is to cross the border with China Mainland and spend an afternoon in Zhuhai. There are many markets and shops which sell inexpensive clothings and accessories. Also, the food here is varied and not bad. Leave a Comment

Tombstone with angel by aramat Saint Michael's (St Miguel) is the Catholic cemetery of Macao. I found the cultural diversity of the place amazing : Chinese characters on a tombstone decorated with a Catholic angel, or Chinese lion statues in the same cemetery as a Buddha relief, photos of Chinese deceased and little gifts on the grave to make life in heaven comfortable... I spent a long time in the cemetery and I found fascinating little details at every step. Leave a Comment

EEEK by heplion We were wandering around some church and my rather uninhibited friend found a box and wondered what was inside. I am sure that there is some sort of sacralige in taking this picture and more so in posting it, but I was told by a Jehova's Witness a year or so ago that there is only something like 50,000 people that will go to heaven, so I figure the odds are already against me.....so here it is :) Leave a Comment

View of Flora Garden. by ahoerner The European-style Flora Garden, situated at the base of Guia Hill parallel to the Avenida Sidonio Pais, was formerly the grounds of the Flora Palace, an aristocratic Portuguese mansion. If you don’t want to climb the Guia Hill, simply take the cable-car to the top. By the time we visited Flora Garden, the cable-car was out of service due to the bad weather. Leave a Comment

Miradouro de N.S.da Penha. by ahoerner Nicely decorated, this courtyard near the Penha Church is where you can have magnificent views from Macau and Taipa specially in open days… we had then the bad luck of visiting a foggy Macau. Leave a Comment
