Rua da Felicidade

by ahoerner

This nice street in the Eastern Macau, blocks away from the Senate Square, is another off the beaten track attraction. It was the former nightlife centre in Macau, displaying today restored façades where shops and restaurants continue to flourish behind them. Here you find lots of nice shops and bakeries offering delicious cookies from Sino-Portuguese recipes…

Jardim da Flora (Flora Garden)

by ahoerner

The European-style Flora Garden, situated at the base of Guia Hill parallel to the Avenida Sidonio Pais, was formerly the grounds of the Flora Palace, an aristocratic Portuguese mansion. If you don’t want to climb the Guia Hill, simply take the cable-car to the top. By the time we visited Flora Garden, the cable-car was out of service due to the bad weather.

Teleferico da Guia

by vincentf

Here's a good view of Macau and Zhuhai, China from the top of a Guia Hill by taking a short cable car ride. It is along Av. Sidonio Pais. The price is MOP5 for a return trip. Bus no. 2 from Barra and Iao Hon will pass near the park.

Hunt for water fountain

by xuessium

This fountain was not mentioned in any guidebook but I came across it looking rather beautiful and splendour along the way to Casino Lisboa. Folks were taking bottles of cold water sprinking out from its tap. I figured why not?

Coloane Island

by Rodan44

Macau's southern most island of Coloane remains mostly undeveloped. Here you will find rugged forested hills, tranquil beaches, and the quaint old village of Coloane. The village itself is worth a visit, even if only to stop at Lord Stow's bakery for their famous egg tarts. Here you will also find St. Francis Xavier Chapel and Tam Kung Temple. The south and east sides of the island contain some fairly decent beaches, which make for some pleasant strolling. On Hac Sa beach you will find the famous Fernando's restaurant, which serves hearty Portuguese fair, but can become very crowded in the evenings.Coloane can be easily reached from Macau or Taipa island either by taxi or public bus.

Four Faces Buddha

by xiquinho

There are two Four Faces Buddha in Macau: one at the end of the car park of the Macau Jockey Club on Taipa Island; and the other at the International Centre close to the wharf which is a very interesting monument in an ornate Thai Style.

Historic Archives

by xiquinho

Contains letters, books and manuscripts pertaining to Portugal's exploration and Macau's relations with Europe, China, Japan, and Southeast Asia from a wide variety of governmental, civic, ecclesiastic and private sources. The most valuable have been put on microfilm, including 7500 items dating from 1587 to 1786.The archives are houses in one of the mansions in colonial style in Avenida de Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida restored by the Macau Government which won the Pacific Area Travel Association's Heritage Award, in 1982.

Old Protestant Cemetery

by xiquinho

Among those buried here: Dr. Robert Morrison, who compiled the first English and Chinese dictionary and translated the Bible into Chinese; George Chinnery, an artist who lived in Macau in the 18th century; Capt. Lord John Spencer Churchill, Commander of H.M. Ship Druid and an ancestor of Sir Winston Churchill; also seamen and non-Portuguese Traders.

Air-Raid Shelters

by xiquinho

On top of the Guia Hill, besides the already well-known structures, the Guia lighthouse, Guia Fort and Our Lady of Guia Chapel, there are also some underground tunnels, which are commonly known as air raid shelters, extending in all directions. The longest tunnel is 456 metres and the shortest 47. In the past the tunnels were off-limits military installations surrounded by barbed wire, equipped with electricity generators, rest rooms and oil tanks.Opening Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Closed on Mondays, except public holidays). Below Guia Hill is the Flora Garden, which can be reached by steps or a cable car that takes visitors to street level in just 80 seconds.

Our Lady of Guia Chapel and Lighthouse

by xiquinho

A small chapel was first built in the 17th century as part of the Guia Fortress and the present chapel dates from 1637. During the restoration of the chapel in 1996, the oldest vestige of mural paintings that dates back to the construction of the hermitage in 1622 were discovered. The recovered paintings are characterized by rich cultural meaning, a combination of Chinese and Western symbols, including angels wearing traditional oriental costumes. The Lighthouse was the first on the China Coast, built by a local born Portuguese, Carlos Vicente da Rocha.
