Barrier Gate (Portas do Cerco)

by xiquinho

Situated at the northern most point of Macau, the stone gate that traditionally marked the border with China is now maintained in a small park. It was erected in 1870 and is inscribed with a quotation from Camoes: 'Honour your country for your country is watching you". Today's travellers use the modern buildings on either side, which house immigration and customs. The border is open from 7 am to midnight.

Coloane Island

by thelittlevoice

Coloane Island is about 20 minutes from Macau by bus(no. 21, 22, 25, 26A, the cost is around 4-5MOP depending on how far each bus goes to). Coloane has two beaches, Cheoc Van and Hac Sa. There's a hiking trails to the big statue of A-Ma. St. Francis Xavier church and a couple of other temples are worth visiting too.

Wake up early for a bit of Tai-Chi

by DrPoi

In the very early morning (from 6h30 till 7h30 normally), when the sun doesn't heat with its usual cruelty in this land you'll see people, old and young, doing their Tai-Chi exercises in public parks, gardens or squares everywhere. A must see, and why not, a must try!!

St Michael Cemetery

by aramat

Saint Michael's (St Miguel) is the Catholic cemetery of Macao. I found the cultural diversity of the place amazing : Chinese characters on a tombstone decorated with a Catholic angel, or Chinese lion statues in the same cemetery as a Buddha relief, photos of Chinese deceased and little gifts on the grave to make life in heaven comfortable... I spent a long time in the cemetery and I found fascinating little details at every step.

Visiting a book store gave us a wider vision of M

by sakurita

We love to visit markets, and other places where locals go often, so whe can feel how daily life is there...We founded this book store in one calm street and we could avoid to enter, it certainly gives us another persepective of Macau's daily life...who comes to the book store? what they look for? how long do they spend to choose a book? etc...very interesting.

EEEEEKK

by heplion

We were wandering around some church and my rather uninhibited friend found a box and wondered what was inside. I am sure that there is some sort of sacralige in taking this picture and more so in posting it, but I was told by a Jehova's Witness a year or so ago that there is only something like 50,000 people that will go to heaven, so I figure the odds are already against me.....so here it is :)

ENGLISH - On this kind of sleigh, made to go over the mug, men were able to catch shellfish or something like that, small crabs maybe. These pictures were taken in 1980 (sorry they are so bad, it was a very small camera, with 16 mm film!!), maybe this activity disapeered now, as all this area is now occupied with land reclamation.- PORTUGUÊS - Com esta espécie de trenó, feito para andar sobre o lodo, apanhavam crustáceos à mão, talvez pequenos caranguejos.

The island of Coloane is Macao's countryside, with wooded hills, beach-lined bays, and traditional villages. Visitors and residents often flock here to swim, have picnics, and simply enjoy the treasure of nature.
