Zhongzhan

by keeweechic

I did a day trip from Macau when of course Macau was not part of China. I am not sure of the border now with China, whether it is open, or there is still some restrictions. Zhongshan is now China's fastest-developing Special Economic Zone in the Pearl River Delta as well as being the birthplace of Dr Sun Yat-sen, the founder of modern China. A whole lot different to what I saw some 12 years ago. Until recently it was one of the poorest areas in China. In the late 1800s it was a major source of labour for Hawaii plantations, and most of Hawaii's Chinese community claim roots here.

Well, I would like to think that Macau is itself off the beaten path for most. But, just wander around and see what you find. Really, it seemed that we were always finding something interesting around every corner... although technically I suppose we were lost, or maybe just en-route back to the ferry terminal.Ah, and find a good vantage point and take pictures of the city or the sea from up high, like Guia Fortress.

Monte Fort, oldest Fort in Macau and probably China.http://www.cityguide.gov.mo/tg/fortress/f_detaile.asp?lc=2&lkey=0204010000000000 000Built 1617-26, Monte Forte occupies 21,000 square feet in an irregular quadrangle with bastions at each corners. It contained barracks, cisterns and storehouses capable of sustaining a siege of up to two years. Constructed by the Jesuits of chunambo on granite foundations, with brick gauardrooms and cannon housings, the fort was part of a complex together with the college and church of St. Paul. The cannons commanded very wide fields of fire, covering the Inner and Outer Harbours and the Chinese border. The guns were used only once, when the Dutch invaded Macau in 1622. A cannonball fired by a priest from Monte hit the invaders' powder key, creating total confusion in which the Portuguese and their African slaves drove the Dutch back to sea.Today the fort...

We didn't intend it, but we got off the beaten path and were crossing the town without seeing all the important sights. We even got lost and had to ask for the way. Later we found a tourist-information and got a map. Though it was fun. The architecture is fascinating there.
