Ming Hong Cafe (A Ma Temple branch): TRY MACANESE! (2)

by xuessium

This is a cafe sandwiched between 2 more upmarket restaurants but don't let that fool you. The chef here had won awards for its Garlic Butter Baked Cod. There is no much in the way of ambience and decor; just tasty food! The staff do not really speak good English but they do have English menu and if all else fail, nothing like plenty of sign languages to get your way. The (spicy) African Chicken & the Portuguese Chicken were delicious! And of course the award winning Garlic Butter Baked Cod.

"Wah Yuen" Seafood Restaurant

by vincentf

A cheap all-you-can-eat hot-pot dinner for MOP38/person. However, don't expect too much for this price.Note: 28 Mar 2005 - The price has gone up to MOP48/person.Note: 30 May 2005 - The hot pot deal is only for winter season.

A LORCHA: TRY MACANESE! (3)

by xuessium

This is supposed to be the flagship of Portuguese food in this former Portuguese colony - the benchmark, the numero uno, if you may. Ambience is quite alright - going for a village tavern look. I did not get to eat here at all as the place was packed to the brim on a Thurs night!! PLEASE RESERVE A TABLE WELL IN ADVANCE to avoid disappointment.

Yi Shun Milk Company Cafe: Got milk?

by xuessium

There isn't much in the way of decor and ambience - the walls are tiled with yellow tiles! But the fridge with the many moulds of milk custard is a dead getaway. This is a place for great Cantonese style milk desserts! Steamed milk custard, steamed egg custard and the pride of the shop, the steamed ginger & milk custard. You can have them hot or cold. Very milky & melts in your mouth - you could have 2 or 3 of them at a go. I like the steamed ginger and milk custard but that's an acquired taste for some. Stick to the steamed milk or egg custard then. Price hovers between 13-18 patacas for different variety.

Margaret's Cafe e Nata: PORTUGUESE EGG TARTS!

by xuessium

Portuguese Egg Tarts was the rage in Asia a few years ago. Though the bubble had burst, it is still worth a try while you are in Macau. Unlike the normal egg tarts, the egg custard is baked in a crispy flaky crust, bringing a totally different mouthfeel sensation. A bite in one rewards you with a creamy eggy filling along with a caramelic lingering taste. This bakery was near my hotel, and their egg tarts are definitely worth a try. Egg Tarts (5.50patacas each)! They serve very tasty pork pizzas as well.

Enjoy Cantonese Congee!

by xuessium

Congee is standard Cantonese fare. Rice has been grinded down to a coarse powder (almost like sand) and then cooked in water and stock, along with any ingredients you desire. Wonderful item to have on a cold day or when your appetite is waning. Good as breakfast, snack, tea or a meal by itself. Almost every cafe, deli, road side stall and even restaurants will serve them. Just ask for "zok". The most famous congee to try will be pork with century egg, pork innards and seafood mixture.

A VENCEDORA aka "KUN JI": TRY MACANESE!

by xuessium

Tucked away near an intersection along Rua do Campo, business is brisk at this Cantonese-owned Macanese food restaurant. (Macanese is the result from the fusion of Chinese and Portugeuese cuisines). Not much in the place of ambience (the walls are white-tiled!), what this restaurant could offer is solid good food and perhaps the greatest cup of milk tea one could ever have. I had the oxtail - cooked so lovely that the meat just stripped off and melts in your mouth.

The Relic Inn Chinese Restaurant

by vincentf

This is one of the bigger Cantonese-style restaurants in Macau. However, it is placed in one of the infamous dodgy places in Macau: Jai Alai Palace and Casino. The restaurant entrance is located at the back of a corridor that caters to gambling halls and massage parlours. If you're feeling extravagent, you can try shark fin soup.

Near Kun Iam Statue

by Ewingjr98

We sat at a small restaurant/cafe on the corner of AvenRua Cidade de Tavaria and Alameda Dr. Carlos d'Assumpcao. This little cafe has a nice view of the Kun Iam Statue, the water, and Assumpcao Park. We sat at an outdoor table along the wide sidewalk and had a few beers as we waited for the sun to go down. A nice spot to sit in new Macau.
