Oriente foundation

by solopes

In Portugal "Oriente Foundation" is a synonymous of... money. I don't know if it is fair, I don't know where does the money com from or where does it go. I know that I stood at the door (don't know if visiting is allowed and interesting) some minutes and saw no note or coin entering or leaving.Nah! I need to review my concepts.

Maritime Museum

by Willettsworld

The Maritime Museum was opened to the public in 1987 and was first located in a green two-storey building next to the A-Ma Temple. The collections increased and a new exhibition hall was built and opened in June 1990. The exhibitions in the three-storey building focus on the maritime activities of Macau, China and Portugal. Collections are divided into different themes, presenting the evolution of Macau, the seafaring accomplishments of both China and Portugal and the importance of their maritime contributions to the world.Open: 10am-5.30pm. Closed Tuesdays. Admission: MOK$10.

Bishops Hill Redux

by machomikemd

Built on top Colina da Penha or Penha Hill, also known as Bishop Hill because of the Bishop Residence, is a Chapel of Our Lady of Penha which was first built in 1622. The first chapel was erected by the crew and passengers of a ship which had a narrow escape from the Dutch. Later the chapel served as shrine for sailors embarking on often hazardous voyages. The chapel today dates back to 1837 when it was completely rebuilt along with the Bishop's Palace. The Colina da Penha is otherwise known for Bishop Hill, because the magnificent Bishop's Residence is on the hill. By the side of the Bishop's Residence, there is a St. Mary Hall called Chapel of Our Lady of Penha which was built in 1622. The Chapel is simple, situated in the middle of winding hillpath. The then Colina da Penha was only a fort. Since the dismantlement of the fort in 1892 the Chapel was enlarged up to the grand scale of...

The Taipa Houses Museum

by vincentf

These five houses were built in early 20th Century for high superiors and Macanese families. It specializes in Portuguese architecture. It is a great little get-away from the hustle and bustle of Macau peninsula. Once you have finished, you can walk down to Rua de Cunha for all the souvenir snacks to bring back.

Leal Senado

by Ewingjr98

The Leal Senado (Loyal Senate) building sits on the eastern edge of Senado Square. Parts of this large white building was completed in 1784. It was the home of the Macau colonial government until 1833, and it still houses the city government today. The building also has a small museum and a public library. The name "loyal" comes from the fact that the colony remained loyal to the Portuguese crown for the 60 years that Spain controlled Portugal and the king reigned from Brazil (1580-1640).

St Paul's Church

by Ewingjr98

Sao Paulo Igreja (St. Paul's Church) was designed by Italian Carlo Spinola and built from 1620-1627 by exiled Japanese Christians. It's massive size gives some idea of the former glory of both Macau and St. Paul's. The church is considered one of the greatest monuments to Christianity in Asia. Unfortunately, this great cathedral was destroyed by fire during a typhoon in 1835 and all that remains is the massive stone facade and the stairs leading up to it.This church is the most profound and long-lasting image many visitors will have of Macau. After you pass the Leal Senado and bear right, you will soon round a corner and be awestruck by the beauty and massive size of the cathedral's towering front wall. Hundreds of people congregate in this area looking for that perfect photo to send home to the family. Small stores and shops are in abundance, most seem to sell little, tan-colored...

Guia Fort

by Ewingjr98

Our first stop in Macau after exiting customs was Guia Fort. It is a small but beautiful hilltop fortress offering stunning views of the city and the water surrounding the island in all directions. Guia Fort was completed on Macau's highest point in 1638. This hilltop houses the fort, and it also hosts the oldest lighthouse on the coast of China (built in 1865) and a beautiful little church called the Chapel of Our Lady Guia. The chapel is the oldest building on the site dating from 1622.We did walk from here to the Leal Senado, but it took about 20 minutes through some narrow, yet scenic residential side streets. The fort is open from 9am to 5:30pm.

A-Ma Temple

by Ewingjr98

A-Ma Temple sits on the western side of Macau facing the Chinese mainland. Over 500 years in existence, this is the oldest temple in Macau. This unique temple is comprised of series of buildings staggered up a rocky hillside. Of the buildings, the Hall of Benevolence is the oldest, while the Prayer Hall was built in 1605, and the Hall of Guanyin was built in 1828.The front Gate Pavilion of this temple is another famous Macau photo spot. Good luck getting a picture without at least a dozen people in the background. Upon entering the temple, notice the large tanks filled with slow-moving turtles. The turtles move so slowly that people drop money on their backs and it stays there for quite a while (it probably stays until someone from the temple collects it!). The temple complex is also full of beggars asking for money. If you make your way up the hillside to the top-most building you will...

Largo do Senado

by Ewingjr98

This is an amazing central shopping area of the city that looks almost like a Mediterranean Europe town. The old three and four-story multi-colored buildings abut a beautiful square. The streets here are paved a unique pattern of yellows and browns in interlocking brick arches.Largo do Senado is Portuguese for Senate Square which is named after the Leal Senado. Leal Senado is Macau's Senate building, the Portuguese house of government for the colony. No motorized vehicles are allowed in this area, making it perfect for an afternoon stroll!
