Moon gate in the A-Ma temple

by aramat

A moon gate is a beautiful architectural feature. Usually it is designed in a way that it gives a glimpse of the view when approached from either side (of course, it's also a gate, so it allows a pathway through the wall). Moon gates resemble the full moon and they are originated from Old China where gardens were - among others - places to meditate, watching the moon's passage in its full circle. Through this moon gate in the A-Ma temple, there is a nice view of the burning incense coils.

Kun Iam statue

by aramat

Kun Iam is the Buddhist goddess of compassion and the protector of women and children. The spectacular statue is on a little artificial island and can be reached by a causeway. The statue itself stands on the top of a lotus-shaped dome, in which visitors find an economical centre of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. The photo is from http://www.cityguide.gov.mo (I ran out of film).

St. Paul's church

by aramat

St. Paul's church was built in 1602 as part of a complex that included the Monte Fort and the Jesuit college, the first Western college in the Far East. Today, all is left of the church is the beautiful facade , the rest of the building was destroyed, together with the college, in a great fire in 1835. It's extremely impressive, probably much more than the church would be, if it was whole. The staircase leading up to the church makes the view magnificent.

Macau Grand Prix

by vigi

Each November, Macau wakes up with a jolt as more than 300 racing drivers and riders, as well as thousands of motor sports fans, descend on the territory for the world's only street circuit race meeting which features both car and motorcycle races.Originated in 1954, today become a race meeting to which the world's leading riders and drivers vie for entries. One of the highlights of the weekend is the Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix, which sees a field of 30 national championship drivers competing to take the chequered flag. For these young super stars of tomorrow, a win at Macau can guarantee the driver a place in a top Formula 3000 team or, in the case of exceptional talent, an immediate invitation to move in to the pinnacle of motor racing, Formula 1.

Macau Museum

by Smruti

Located at the top of a fort built by the Jesuits in 1626, the Macau Museum overlooks the city center (and not incidentally, is close to the cathedral ruins, and the Lago de Senado, for those of you who want ot pack in the historical part of Macau in a day)The Museum exhibits gives a fascinating look at the Portuguese and Chinese history of Macau along with many artifacts of life, including clothes, architecture, furniture, food, and stories about the many times Macau was attacked by various nations. Also, as of December 2002, there was an exhibit on the symbols of China: the national anthem, emblem, and the flag. Pretty intersting,as it included some of the other designs that had been submitted for the flag and why they chose the one they now have. Note to museum shoppers: there is a little gift shop that has a few good postcards, a great little paper doll book with Macau wedding...

Lou Lim Ioc Garden

A Chinese garden built in Suzhou style. It's a beautiful example of a harmonious environment and a pleasant place to walk around in the heat.I love this garden, so I tell more about it in the travelogue.

S. Francisco fort

by solopes

I don't remember where I read that:"Built 1629 on the site of a battery which sank one of the warships' The Golias' of the Dutch invaders, the original fortress of S. Francisco stood at the end of old Praia Grande, facing the Taipa channel. Its armaments included a culverin, which could fire 35-pound iron shots a distance of one and a half miles (the width of the channel). Little more is known of the original fort or the convent of S. Francisco, which was attached to it.Both fort and convent were demolished to make way for new barracks in 1864, to house the Battalion of the First Line, brought in as defence against a Chinese attack which never came. The barracks survive today as headquarters for the Security Forces and sections of the Police Force. They present an attractive, colonial facade of pink-washed stone with white trim. Inside are offices and meeting rooms around a flag-stoned...

Nice to see

by solopes

Whenever a country changes its sovereignty, history is affected, and the signs of the past rapidly removed and replaced for the new values and references. That didn't happen in Macao. It's easy to understand the decision to keep palaces, churches or fortresses, but the presence of a Portuguese navigator, it's surprising. Chinese rulers must be saluted for this decision.

St Paul

by solopes

I couldn't understand why the remains of a ruined church became the image of Macao! There are several wonderful examples of Portuguese architecture, at least so interesting as that facade. But... that's the way it is. We were there, hundreds moved around it all the time, and the rain didn't spoil much because the visit should always be quick. But reading about it I discovered that, built in the 16th century, it was the biggest cathedral in the east, sometimes called "eastern Vatican". Burnt in 1835, only the facade escaped from destruction, some people believing that it was a miracle.Mixing European, Chinese and Japanese details, it is, today, UNESCO heritage.

Museum and art

by solopes

The new Macau museum is located inside the fort, close to São Paulo ruins. The historic area around the ruins is the best place to see and buy art and historic crafts, even inside some classified buildings.
