    It costs 2.5MOP to travel within Macau. Macau- Taipa = 3.3MOP(no.11, 15, 22, 28A, 33, 34)
Macau- Coloane = 4MOP, 5MOP if it goes to Hac Sa
    Airport bus = 6MOP(AP1)

You can read all about the stations each bus goes to at the bus station, it's in both Chiness and English.

It's very convenient to go around by bus. At the bus station, there're both texts in Chinese and English telling the name of each station. However the English text is on the other side of the sign which means you have to pass that station and look back to be able to see it. The best way to do this is count how many stations you have to pass through.

Macau have plenty of licensed and metered taxis. Thre are two types of taxis - black and yellow taxis. Black painted with a creamcoloured roof, joined by radio-called taxis in yellow colour with the contact numbers below.

Vang Iek Taxi Phone number: (853) 519519; Macau Taxi Phone number: (853) 967115

Flag fall and the first 1500 meters travelled is 10 patacas. The fare for each subsequent 220 meters is 1 pataca, with waiting time at 1 pataca each minute.

Each piece of luggage carried in the trunk coasts 3 patpcas. Surcharges of 2 patacas for journeys from Taipa to Coloane, of 5 patacas for Macau to Coloane, and 5 patacas for journeys starting from Macau International Airport. There is no surcharge for return trips from the islands to Macau.

Very few taxi drivers can speak English. Most can understand Mandarin. So be sure to grab a bilingual map in the ferry terminal or in the hotels.

    Going around with Buses
Public buses and minibuses run from 6:45 a.m. to midnight. On all routes within the city, the fare is 2.5 patacas per journey. There are buses (Route 3, 3A, 10, 12, 23, 28C & 32) that provide regular service between the city and the piers for incoming or out going visitors.

All buses are air-conditioned and are quite comfortable. Try to avoid travelling during the rush hour, when buses tend to become over crowded.

There are buses from Macau to the islands with regular departures throughout the day, from 6:45 a.m. to 11 p.m. The fares are: Taipa - 3.3 patacas, Coloane Village - 4.0 patacas and Hac Sa Beach - 5.00 patacas. Passengers are required to have the exact fare.

There is a bus stop between Hotel Lisboa and the Portuguese school. You can enjoy a comfortable trip to the picturesque islands aboard an air-conditioned bus.

Bus number AP1 links the airport with the ferry terminal and downtown. It costs 6 patacas.

    Macau Pedicab!

  • A Pedicab! - Macao
    A Pedicab!
    by machomikemd
Pedicabs are the slowest but also the most romantic way of experiencing the long sweep of the Praia Grande Bay, and the older and traditional streets downtown.

Pedicabs first appeared in the 1930's, when Macau was still a fishing village. At that time, cars and other forms of public transportation were not very popular; therefore, pedicabs became the main means of transportation for going around the city, both for passengers and for transporting goods

Two main pick up locations for pedicabs are the Ferry Terminal and Hotel Lisboa. Avoid trouble by settling on an agreed fare first. Expect to pay about 10-30 patacas for a single journey. It may reach up to 100 patacas an hour for sightseeing, depending on where you go.

Pedicabs are best along the Praia Grande, the "old seashore". Don't expect pedicabs to go up the Penha Hill and other points of interest

Main locations for catching a cycle-rickshaw are : outside the Maritime Terminal and opposite the main door of the Lisboa Hotel. Fares are negotiable, but expect to pay about MOP$150 for an one hour trip, depending on where you go. Be sure to agree on a price first.

Turbojet Catamaran ferry service from Hongkong to Macau and Vice versa is a new service, previously only regular boat ferry and the smaller jetfoil ply the route. This is a little bit slower than a jetfoill ride but only by 5 minutes since jetfoil travel time is about 50 minutes while Turbojet is 55 minutes (hkg-macau and vice versa). The ride is a little bit rough since the seas around the pearl river delta and south china are rough but you won't feel sea sick. They offer day and night service.

The ferry also includes shenzen and hongkong airport.

price for one way economy class is hkg macau is 138 HKD and Macau HKG is 142 HKD weekdays and 150 and 154 HKD at weekends.

Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Pier is located in Porto Exterior, Macau Peninsula
and in Hong Kong: China Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui and Shun Tak Centre in Central

Air Macau flies directly from Bangkok to Macau.

    M W TH F S
Leave Bangkok at 9.45pm Arrive Macau 1.30am
Leave Macau 6.50pm Arrive Bangkok 8.45pm

The cost of course varies depending on which time of year you're flying. There was a promotion when I did, it was for 2 persons traveling together. I saw this secret book that one travel agency has and it was listed only 6000 Baht each BUT you can never find such a price, you'll be damn lucky to get 7500!

Macau Airport is on Taipa Island but it takes only about 10-15 minutes to get to Macau.

    Warning: The airport shuttle AP-1

  • The Lonely Planet claimed that there is an Airport Shuttle bus. WRONG! There is no such thing. Technically, well, yes there is. The public bus service runs a line called AP-1 which will bring you out of the airport into the city (or to the airport from the city) at a flat cost of $3.30 patacas (circa May 2005). What you don't know is that this bus service is one of the most loop around service you will ever get as it virtually stops at every major tourist point in Macau. A journey could take you 40-50 minutes whereas a taxi could take only 20-25 minutes. And some of the bus drivers may not understand English. If you have time to spare and don't mind seeing Macau or if you are really intent on saving a few patacas (or HK$), well, don't let me stop you. The bus stop is right outside the airport, on the extreme left hand side after you get out from the Arrival Hall.

There are 2 ways to get to Macau from Hong Kong:

    TURBOJET
It costs HK$141 (circa 2005) one way to catch the ferry from Macau Ferry Terminal to the Sheung Wan Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong on Hong Kong Island (and vice versa). The journey takes about 1 hour, and yes, you need that passport.

Don't worry about tickets, they are easily available on the spot. Most standard hotels offer free shuttle buses to the ferry terminal in Macau.

Turbojet also offers service that brings visitors directly from HK Airport to Macau.
    Addendum by seagypsy:
..."Only certain airlines with flights from HK are allowed on this service. And if you want to go via the opposite route, ie. from HK airport to Macau, you have to arrange this within the airport AND you must NOT go thru HK immigration. This needs to be arranged via the transit desk within HK Airport"...

    FIRST FERRY
Catamarans from the First Ferry offer roundtrip sailings to and from Macau and the Kowloon Peninsula, arriving at the China (HK) Ferry Terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon).
The journey takes about 60-75 minutes. The ticket price ranges from HK$140 to HK$275.

For details, please call Hong Kong (852) 2516-9581 or Macau (853) 726301.
You can also visit the website: http://www.nwff.com.hk.
(Disclaimer: I have not tried this service)

There is a regular ferry service from Hong Kong to Macao and back. I used TurboJet which was OK, offered many departures every day, left and arrived on time and even let me take an earlier ferry (I booked a very late one back to Hong Kong, but got too tired during the day and wanted to leave an hour earlier).
The picture is from TurboJet's site, I can't find mine.

Whether by jet foil, fast boats or ferries, Hong Kongers flock to Macao by sea over the weekend to gamble or as a getaway for a slower pace.

An alternate way besides helicopter ride, you can take the bus from Hong Kong to Macao through Shenzen, Humen Bridge and Zhuhai but this require China visa.

While both Hong Kong and Macao are SAR, Special Adminstrative Region, there is separate immigration for all 3 - China, Hong Kong and Macao. Fortunately, Macao is visa free for most countries.

So remember to book in advance your boat ticket back from Macao to Hong Kong especially on weekends.
