People from Malaysia

by DanielF

Malaysia is an ethnically and culturally very diverse country. Although you notice sometimes certain larved tensions between the different communities that contradict the idealised version of harmony that the authorities claim, it is true that the peaceful coexistence of different races, beliefs and languages make of Malaysia a true model of multicultural country. Beyond all the cultural differences, most Malaysians are warmspirited people that really welcome all visitors and make the effort that they feel well there. They tend to be a bit shy and reserved but at the same time they are really curious about foreigners and always willing to help.Do not be surprised if you encounter a group of scholars and they ask you to pose with them in their pictures.

" Malaysia the Real Asia "

by josephrawf

Penang : The town of Georgetown however is charming with its little streets full of life, temples and guesthouses. It is busy but it makes sense... Kuala Kangsar: Superb Ubudiah Mosque, as well as other striking monuments and traditional houses. Its location by the river and mountains also makes it a very relaxing place from which you could launch natural explorations of the surroundings. Its offer of guesthouses is however quite limited as few people stop here... Cameron Highlands : Surrounded by jungles, tea plantations, strawberries farms and villages inhabited by Orang Asli. Its cool climate makes it popular year round and recent development has somehow spoiled the view a bit but it remains one of the most relaxing spot of Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur : One of the nicest in Asia and set a number of world's records. Its buildings (old or new) are strikingly beautiful, its museums are...

Annual lights of Kek Lok Si

by SLLiew

Every Chinese New Year for about a month, lamps and bulbs will adorn the Kek Lok Si temple and light up the entire temple complex like a fairy land. The cost of lighting is borned by the devotees of this temple. It is quite an awesome sight. If you are in Penang at this time of the year, do not miss visiting the temple at night. Of course, there will be many others and so there will be heavy traffic to contend with.

Penang History - Chinese Immigrants

by SLLiew

There were two major groups of Chinese immigrants. The earlier group were called Straits Chinese who came when the British started to build Penang as a major trading port during the 19th century. Many intermarry with the locals or adopt local Malay customs and became known as the Peranakan or Baba Nonya. The latter group were called "sin keh" or "new arrivals" who came as laborers for the tin mining industry or as shopkeepers in the growing settlement. Many of this group considered China their homeland with the intention of making money and returning to China with their fortunes. Many did not make it or decided to stay in Penang. In Penang, you can see many clan temples like Khoo Kongsi, Cheah Kongsi, Yap Kongsi and different dialect associations buildings all over George Town. Rags to riches immigrant Chinese left beautiful mansions allow the Millionaire Row along Northam Road including...

In 1963 after a brief confrontation with Indonesia and dispute from Philippines, Sabah and Sarawak as well as Singapore joined Malaya to become Malaysia. In 1965, Singapore left the federation.Penang made history when the Penang Bridge was finally open in 1985 thus finally connecting Penang Island to Mainland Penang. Before that, the ferry was the only main form of transport between both sides.

Penang History - Early Independence

by SLLiew

Penang became a state under the Federation of Malaya in August 31, 1957.It was a time of reckoning for many local Chinese and Indians have to decide whether they are now Malayan citizens, or temporary economic migrants who will return back to China or India or to migrate to England following their imperial "masters".

Penang History - Before Independence

by SLLiew

Queen Elizabeth conferred city status to George Town in 1957. Penang is the first city in Malaysia.During this period, Penang island enjoy tax free status and many tourists from Mainland Malaya, Thailand and Indonesia flocked to Penang Island to do their shopping. Penang Road was a premier shopping road but today is no longer so.Penang was also a major education center where many English schools like Penang Free School, St. Xavier's, St. Georges and Convent Light Street produced students who continue their education in London and England. All these schools are still running but the language of instruction has since being changed from English to Malay.

Penang History - Post World War II

by SLLiew

After the war, there was communist insurgencies throughout Malaya. Under a "Briggs Plan", many local Chinese farmers in the outskirts were resettled in fenced-up villages as a way to combact the communist insurgencies.Hence, villages in mainland Penang like Val Dor, Jawi and Permatang Tinggi are townships arising from Briggs Plan. The village were planned and so the roads are all in a grid and the houses occupying similar footage. There was a treaty to fight the communist made between Malaya, UK, Australia and NZ. Hence there is the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base which is still around but now under the Royal Malaysia Air Force (RMAF) in Butterworth.
