Penang History - Japanese Occupation

by SLLiew

Penang was bombed during the early air attacks on Dec 8, 1941 by the Japan airforce and later bombed by the Allied Force. So there are some missing gaps between some of the colonial buildings in Weld Quay and Light Street is because these buildings were destroyed during the war.At the present E&O Hotel at Light Street, the British plantation managers with their families had gathered and full evacuation of Penang by ships had completed on Dec 17, 1941.Life was hard during the Japanese occupation. Many local Chinese lost their lives because they support the war in China against the Japanese army there. There is a memorial for those local Chinese killed in Air Itam near the small roundabout on the way to Penang Hill. There are also some items on display of the Japanese occupation in the Penang State Museum. Many fortunes were lost when the Japanese money become worthless overnight at the end...

Penang History - Early 20th Century

by SLLiew

Penang was still thriving port though eclipsed by Singapore in the early 20th century as tin was smelted and transported out. Also Penang served as an important export port for rubber from the northern mainland Malaya.Near Komtar where the Berjaya Square, along Jalan Dato' Kramat, is being built was the original sight of a major tin smelting factory.Penang was not attacked during World War I but there is a memorial for lives lost at the Esplanade due to a submarine and ship battle near Penang Channel. Some World War I war artifacts is found at Penang State Museum.

Penang History - 1786 to 19th century

by SLLiew

It is quite to know a bit of local history when travelling the various tourist destination.George Town was established as a English port in 1786 during the reign of King George III by the English Captain Sir Francis Light. A statue of Francis Light is found inside the Fort Cornwallis. Lebuh Light (Light Street) is named after him.Near Fort Cornwallis is a Victoria Clock Tower that was built to commemorate the 60th Jubilee of Queen Victoria. There is a Lebuh Victoria near the old bus station parallel to Beach Street. In those days, Penang was part of the Straits Settlements which including Melaka and Singapore as well as Dindings (in Perak). Spanis silver coins were the currency of use until Victoria coins came into being.

Watching hawker preparing food step by step

by SLLiew

At Penang famous hawker food stalls, you can watch how the food is prepared and even take videos or photos at each step. From the gathering of right amount of noodles into the bowl, added the garnishes, pouring the hot soup to cook it, then some more ingredients sprinkled on the top. You will see other food buyers standing at the stall as they are waiting for take-away (to go). Most of the hawker's special secrets are in the sauce or gravy or special recipes already premixed and so there is no concern of someone trying to "copy" by taking photos, etc.As the business is brisk and busy, most would not have time to chat or may not speak English that fluently. So just bring out your camera with a big smile and if it is a no-no, you will see the body language. But you can see the number of shots that I have taken, it usually is no-problem to watch and to take some photos to share with others.

Rice Milling Factories

by SLLiew

On the way from Alor Setar towards Kangar, saw this rice milling factory. It was one belonging to Bernas (Beras Nasional) - a government started rice milling factories across the country to cut the middlemen and ensure that rice farmers get a fair price. This is where the "brown" rice becomes "white" rice. Outside the factory ground, there were young rice saplings germinating from the fallen rice seeds. As Malaysians eat a lot of rice everyday, we tend to forget where our food comes from.

Sungai Petani - Bank Building

by SLLiew

In Sungai Petani, near the Clock Tower, stands a beautiful colonial building that now houses the HSBC Bank - a British bank! It has an historic facade with a Moorish dome that is worth a look at. Hope that its heritage value will be preserved as most of the buildings in Sungai Petani is now so new.Location: 69, Jalan Ibrahim (downtown)

Perlis - Tree lined roads

by SLLiew

When driving Perlis, I am impressed by the beautiful trees lining on both sides of the roads. The road is usually straight and flat. With only a narrow two lane, the trees on both sides seem to close in from a distance. Different foliage trees including mahogany are plenty as a windbreaker and shade from the sun.

Alor Setar Post Office

by SLLiew

Another legacy of British rule in Kedah and Malaysia is an effective Postal System with post offices in all major towns and villages. The postal system in Malaysia has since been privatised under "POS MALAYSIA". It still maintains an important transaction centers for all towns and villages as it is now computerized for paying your electric, water, satelitte television bills, government saving accounts, renewing your vehicle road tax, etc.In Alor Setar, the "old" main Post Office is still maintained. It is right downtown in a building worth preserving as a heritage building. Reminding the days when the postman on his bicycle rings the bell to deliver mail.
