It is bordered by Kedah in the north and Perak in the South. Penang Island has the international airport at Bayan Lepas. There is a ferry service between the island and mainland and a 13 km bridge.Penang is a major electronics manufacturing hub and a major tourist destination on the island. The mainland part is seldom visited by foreign tourists except to Butterworth to catch the train.

Padang = field, Besar = big (in Malay)Before the opening of Bukit Kayu Hitam border crossing, Padang Besar was the only major crossing into Thailand on the west coast of Malaysia. Today it is still the busy railway crossing to Thailand as there is a daily international train from Bangkok to Butterworth. The immigration offices of both countries are conveniently next to each other inside the railway station. Many travellers of Thailand use the oivernight train to Penang to renew their Thai visa.It is also popular to cross the border by foot over the pedestrian railway bridge to do some day shopping.

A short drive from Gerik in the northern Perak is the small town of Pengkalan Hulu on the way to the East West Highway between Perak and Kelantan.There is a border crossing into Thailand called Bukit Berapit. You can walk across the border and then a jeep into the Thai town of Betong. Used to be a famous communist town and there is a series of communist tunnels to tour. A fun day trip into Thailand if you are in the neighborhood.
