The rearing of magpies singing birds is generally the hobby of senior citizens... It is a popular pastime as I have been to many such gatherings all over the country when i travel, particular in smaller towns... Generally, the owners of these prized pets converge every morning without fail to discuss the performance of their birds... From the numbers, it is evident magpie-rearing is a popular pastime with the seniors nurtured through decades...
Given ample love and care, the magpies sing beautifully... Every morning, these owners meet up for the birds' baths, to listen to the melodious songs and to socialise with friends who share a common passion... One of my friends in Sungai Chua, 70-year-old Siow Yuen Siong has been training magpies as young as a few weeks old to sing... It would take up to a year to train magpies to sing and the average lifespan of a bird was 13 to 15 years...
From the earliest time, Kajang has been noted for its satay or skewered meat barbecued over a charcoal grill dip in a special groundnut sauce... Some claimed that it is the sauce that make a good satay meal...
Open on March 26, 2009, the gallery is within the mini-complex located next to the Medan Sate Kajang and displays artefacts, information panels, audio visual guides and dioramas tracing the history of satay in Kajang back to 1917... Satay was introduced by one Tasmin Sakiban from Java, Indonesia... Tasmin arrived in Kajang in 1914 via Sungai Langat and pioneered the satay business in 1917... There are many satay stalls in Kajang now but the most famous is Sate Hj Samuri who has successfully franchised the satay business with outlets in Kajang, Putrajaya, Subang, Sungai Buloh and Senawang... The wife of Hj Samuri is a direct descendent of Tasmin, the pioneer of Kajang satay...
The Gallery is opened from 9.00am to 4.00pm Mondays to Fridays and admission is free...
