Wood Coffins in Limestone Caves

Located 50km north of Lahad Datu or 107km south of Sandakan, the Archeological Museum is really only accessible if you have your own transportation. The museum is located immediately on the highway connecting Lahad Datu and Sandakan.

The Museum is run by the same management as the Sabah Museum and charges the same admission (15MYR for foreigners).

The museum is not for the handicapped since it is required to climb ~500 steep steps up to the caves on the top of a limestone rock pinnacle.

Inside these caves, there are several of the wooden coffins still in place. These coffins are decorated with various livestock figures on their ends. It is commonly believed that these wooden coffins originated with the Chinese settlers who came in the 1400's.

From the top of the rock pinnacle, the observation platform allows you to view a 360-degree panorama of the jungle and valley floor.
