Danum Valley Park is not a self-tour

About ~80km from Lahad Datu is Danum Valley Park that has an eco-lodge. While most information and brochures says that this is accessible by car from Lahad Datu, this is only partially true.

Please note that you are not allowed to drive to Danum Valley, nor its lodge. Even some of the locals may misunderstand this and tell you all you need is prior authorization, but this is not true either. Only Malaysians can drive in the Park, and only 4x4 vehicles are allowed. Therefore if you wish to visit, you must contract a tour agency or booking for transportation and accommodation.

Once inside the park, again you wish to see anything other than the eco-lodge, you may be unfortunate. Walking paths are limited, and if you want to go into the interior, it must be with authorized drivers on designated access roads.
