Lost Malaya Gallery & Lounge: A feel of old Malaya
zuyao profile photo
zuyao 312 reviews

An old colonial bungalow along the seaside, converted into an art gallery and lounge. The deco is pre-independence Malaya. There is an art gallery depicting pictures of Malaysia. A small lounge on the first floor serves drinks (including beer) and light snacks. The ambience is relaxing and cozy. There is also a pool table.

It makes a nice place for friends to hang out in the evening, without the loud banging music of the typical night spots in JB. The staff are also friendly and helpful.

T.A.M. Disc Laser Karaoke Lounge: Sing your night away
bkoon profile photo

4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

bkoon 819 reviews

One of numerous karaoke pubs staked out along the bustling commercial square of Taman Sentosa, this lounge offers sing along entertainment over a triple-storey terrace shophouse. A communal singing lounge takes centre stage downstairs, while private singing rooms are located on the upper floors. The going rate for the private rooms that seat six to 12 persons starts from MYR30 per hour onwards. Beer and hard liquor are the drinks of choice among the patrons.

During off-peak hours, eg in the afternoons, you need to only pay for room charges as you can bring your own food.

Pasar Malam - Night market.: Pasar Malam.

Having a stroll in these weekly, open air night markets is very interesting. The tradition has been well maintained and is a vital highlights in the life of people in Malaysia. In these night markets, one can find a variety of stalls selling vegetables, meat, fruits, titbits, different types of cooked food, drinks, household utensils, clothes, etc. These vendors usually move from one place to another every day.
You get to see vendors arriving and starting to set up their stalls at about 4.30pm and will usually end at 10pm. Usually it is very crowded with housewifes, children, working class people. The peak hours when there's a lot of people is around 6pm till about 9pm. I love to visit pasar malam for dinner!
Warning: not a sit-down dinner, but a take-away dinner, or you eat as you walk (which you can see). ;-)

Dress Code: These night markets are usually situated in housing estates for the residents. And on different days of the week.
The following is the locations of night markets in JB:
Monday: Century Gardens, Kg. Melayu, Kota Tinggi, Permas Jaya
Tuesday: Taman Pelangi, Bukit Chagar, Johor Jaya
Wednesday: Tmn Daya, Ungku Mohsin, Tmn Selesa Jaya, Plentong Baru
Thursday: rest day
Friday: Puteri Wangsa
Saturday: Tun Aminah, Pasir Gudang, Jln.Nong Chik, Taman Johor
Sunday: Seri Pandan

The more accessible ones near the city center are Century Gardens, Taman Pelangi. I usually visit the Taman Johor one on Saturday cos I stay around there. :-)

Where to drink???

Alcohol consumption is not a culture in JB and in Malaysia on the whole.
You can either go to the pub, restaurants, discos, or a coffeeshop for some drinks. Drinking in a coffeeshop is quite interesting. Just sit at a table, order some food, chat and drink, and also people watch.

I usually do not drink alcohol, but there's a place where I like to go with my friends for catching up over a cuppa coffee or tea. I like the lounge at Hyatt hotel. Usually we go there on Fridays or Saturday night just for a cuppa coffee or tea. The atmosphere is excellent and they have live pianist, violinist and sometimes flutist till 12 am.

Karaokes.

There are many karaoke lounges in JB. Most of them attract people from Singapore during the weekends. Most of the lounges have "ladies" for the company of those lonely men.
I used to go to Karaoke to sing with my friends. We do not "call" any gals, we just go there for singing.
Usually, we will book a room for ourselves and order some drinks and titbits... and choose the songs we want to sing, however loud we want.
The official closing time of these karaokes is 1 am (if not earlier). However, you can continue till however late or early you want cos the owner will only close their main door. Remember the rooms are charged hourly. The bigger the rooms, the higher the charges.

Pubs, discos, etc.

I have noticed many "westerners" classified nightlife with pubs, discos, etc, whatever with alcohol. I do not go to any of the discos or pubs in JB. These places in JB are usually quite seedy related to drugs abuse.
