  • Seafood. - Johor Bahru
    Seafood.
    by A2002
Pasir Gudang is not a place for tourism. It is an industrial area with some major oil and gas companies, huge production plants and a port.

There is also a very very big golf course with much greenery around. Beautiful grounds indeed.

If you happen to be in Pasir Gudang, there's a "Orang Asli" settlement with several seafood restaurants along the coast. Best of all, all the restaurants are built on stilts above the sea water. "Orang Asli" are the natives of Malaysia and they have their own language. They live in houses built from wood along the coast. Some of them have their houses floating on the sea.

Seafood here is relatively cheap. To get there, one will have to pass through an oil palm plantation along a muddy path. The drive would be quite dark and I think one will not go if not familiar. Furthermore, there's a stretch of bumpy, unkept path to get there. Maybe you might give up getting there at night if you have never been there before.

At the restaurants here, do not expect superb service. These are just family run restaurants. Sometimes you can will have to wait for quite some time for your food to be served if there are too many people.

Here, you choose the fish, prawns, etc from ponds built on the sea (not fish tanks). Quite interesting to people from the city. The seafood here are very fresh and delicious. Best of all, still quite cheap (May2004).

    At the restaurant built on
    stilts.
    by A2002
Many Singaporeans and locals like to go to Kukup for seafood. Kukup is a small fishing village along the Straits of Johor. There are several seafood restaurants there serving fresh seafood. Some of the restaurants are built on stilts, and the human waste go into the sea directly. Do walk around first to choose which restaurant to try.
Nowadays, I do not go to Kukup for seafood often, cos it is getting a bit expensive due to tourism, and it's far from where I live.
But going there is interesting and educational to have a walk on those "kelongs" - houses built from wood on stilts above the mangrove swamp.

My most recent trip to Kukup for seafood has been very disappointing. The water seems to be more murky than before, and more rubbish seen during low tides. When I was there in April 2003, business does not seem to be good there. The restaurant that I went to served me a coconut drink that has turned sour :-(. Seafood not as delicious. Not worth the trip.

    Trip to Desaru.

  • Desaru is developed into a beach resort with white sandy beaches for resting and relaxing. It is dangerous to swim in the sea as it is the South China sea with very strong waves, especially at the end of the year. Dun forget to bring your sunblock too! It can get really hot.
To get to Desaru, it is better to have a car for the convenience. Near Desaru, there's excellent and cheap seafood at Sungei Ringgit which is about 30km from Desaru. It is a small town with numerous seafood restaurant and some with views overlooking to Singapore.

Come to think about it, Desaru might be a place for surfers with the huge and strong waves. I am not a surfer, so I do not really know the dangers and requirements for surfing. I only know surfers want big waves. Desaru is a place popular with the locals only and surfing is not our usual sports. Maybe some surfers can check it out and tell me about it.

  • Kukup is a very small fishing village. The house are built on stilts above the mangrove swamps. Life here is peaceful and relaxed. Do have a walk around the small village and see the houses built on stilts.

Most of these houses are for rent. Rentals are per person inclusive of seafood BBQ. The owners will usually stay in the house, however, they will move to somewhere else if someone is interested to rent for a day or two.

Have a picnic and dip in the Pulai waterfall. It is a popular place among the local for a dip in the cold water in this hot climate.

    Buying pineapples at a stall.
    by A2002
Pekan mean town, and nenas mean pineapple. There are many pineapple plantations there. Along the road, you can see many stalls selling fresh and sweet pineapples. The pineapple there is the best in Johor, very juicy, sweet and simply delicious.
There's a pineapple museum near the town. I have not been there, but passed by there. Seems interesting.
Remember to bargain while buying the pineapples.

People spend aalmost of their entire life here on top the water. You can see kids play in the water at the evening before dinner.
