Istana Besar (Grand Palace) Museum
If there's one thing we really appreciate in Johor is this museum, which houses a good collection of royal heirloom, impressive rare artefacts and a good record of the history of the States's Royal Family.

    Shopping!
If you love shopping, don't forget to drop by Pelangi shopping complex, The Holiday Plaza :) You can get around Johor by taxi, and the fare is pretty cheap.... :) Oh yeah, there is a shopping centre near the Johor Bahru Custom checkpoint too... (somehow I forgot the name of the shopping centre).... but I guess you can ask around as it is very a popular shopping spot! :)

    Johor Bahru Zoo
If you want close encounters with the tigers, then this zoo is for you. For me it's really scary like there's this one tiger whose cage's door is so small and only locked by a small yale. The tiger was really huge that it can easily break that small door with some visitors enraging it. This really scared me and so is the tiger's sound of exasperation.

The tigers enclosures are, I think, not safe enough. There are some enclosures that you have to take up the stairs and see the tigers below. But there's this tiger who's sitting on top of a cement-made branch, which made him reach the same level as the visitors'. I didn't stay there for so long as that tiger can just jump to me or so.

One reason I went to Johor zoo is to see a camel. I can't remember having seen one in person.

    Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque
In front of Johor Zoo lies the Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque. We were not allowed to enter the mosque but we were still able to take photos of the mosque's external architecture and its garden.

Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque is the architectural pride of Johor. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful mosques in Malaysia.

Since it's on top of the 'hill' the view of the Johor straits is so nice to see and take photos of.

    Istana Bukit Serene
Istana Bukit Serene on the edge of town is the residence of the Sultan of Johor... The Istana or palace was completed in 1933 and its 32-metre tower is a city landmark... The Sultan's private residence is not open to the public but visitors can view the tower and the beautiful garden from the main road... The unique carvings on the walls on this historical building features Art Deco influences...

The palace has a huge sprawling garden which is a common site for many royal gatherings and celebrations... The palace grounds are guarded by His Majesty's personal military, the Johor Military Forces...

    Searching for hard-to-find DVDs
JB has good shopping place for DVDs but not CDs. One should check out City Square -'Ohhlala' located at 1st/2nd floor located near the escalator & 'Fire DVD' shop at LG29 Holiday plaza. U can find a lot of Rock Concert DVDs of Western Rock stars, u stand a chance to find it here if what u r looking for is hard-to-find, they are cheaper than KL, Ohhlala is slightly expensive compares to Holiday Plaza JB .

These guys who sells videos CDs at these shops, they r professional, tell them what kind of movies u like, they'll be able to give u a lot of correct movie suggestions. And these videos are good qualities. One can find a lot of foreign movies here in Holiday Plaza as well. Those u cant find anywhere else bcz they r not popular, I'm talking bat those that r rare & in good video quality, not those which is in the cinema & hot in town.

    Watching Fireflies by the river
Our first stop was at Desaru Fruit Farm near to the tip of Johore State - Penggarang as it is known. The farm boasts of a few hectares of fruit trees, mostly honey lemon which grows plentifully on the trees and riped for plucking. But signages warned of a fine of RM 500....As the bus entered the farm, a guide gave a briefing on the fruit trees available at site - dragon fruit trees are now being planted, jackfruits are nurtured to make sure that they grew to over 5 kgs?, durians, mangoes, rambutans. Then there were enclosures for fowls, ostrich, birds..
Recently the farm also started selling honey which I believe was harvested elsewhere. Gentlemen, - do you know that they now have honeyed `tongkat ali', the so-called natural Viagra. It comes in a full bottle costing about S$80.
Our next stopover is at the Ostrich Farm in the vicinity of Penggarang. You can stand on the ostrich egg to see if it breaks, touch them and ride on Tom if you like - kids would love to do that... .You can also feed them with corn readily available for RM1.00. Ah, talking of food, we had a good lunch with lobster at a seafood restaurant in Penggarang.
Now comes the highlight of the tour. After dinner, we put on our life jackets and went on a motor-boat berthed at the river near to Kota Tinggi Town. By 7.30 pm, the place is dark. As we near to the fireflies haunt by the river, we strained our necks to see them...`Look there, there.`` ~ we turned and looked. A tiny fickle of light sparkled. Then we saw them - a swarm of tiny sparkles, like our lighted Christmas trees. Another swarm of sparkles. Suddenly, one strayed into our boat. We tried to look at it close-ranged but the light faded and all we could see was a dark insect, like a big ant...

    Reading time
The Johor State Library has newly-opened in Johor Bahru. The book collection is new though modest. The library itself is a quaint, comfortable place to spend a few hours of reading. Unlike most other libraries in Malaysia, the atmosphere is relaxed without too much rules on food/drinks, dressing etc. The ambience if good.
