The restaurant is on stilts jutting into the sea, just as like other buildings in Kukup Laut... There is an airy non air-conditioned dining hall as well as an air-conditioned room... The restaurant treats the sea as a disposal rubbish dump as restaurant workers can be seen throwing food left-overs overboard right in front of diners...

Service is poor and the restaurant seems to be more interested in catering to group tours... The same can be said of other restaurant in Kukup Laut... We were completely ignored in Hi King Restaurant and then decided to try this restuarant...

Favorite Dish: The food is rather ordinary as in any seafood restaurants elsewhere... Seafood available includes fish, crabs, prawns, mussels, sotongs and vegetables...The fish that we ordered was frozen and not fresh swimming fish...

Long Huang Seafood: Restaurant with Dishonest and Abusive Staff

My family and I went to this restaurant for lunch. We have picked a dish (Sea cucumber & Fish Maw) on their menu, that states small for RM16, medium for RM24 and large for RM30. As we have ordered many other dishes, we have requested for a small one for this dish.

During payment, we were surprised by the price tag of RM26 for this dish. Upon asking, the staff there (two girls, one in her teens and the other early 20s) brought in another menu, with stickers pasted over the price for that dish. They said the prices had increased, and the small portion is no longer served! But the last menu we saw from them has no such stickers! All these were said in a rude and loud manner. The teen was indignant and looked scornfully at us. The other said she "upsized" the dish for us as she saw that we had 10 people (contrary to their previous assertion that the small portion was taken off the menu). We did not ask for them to upsize our portion as it will only be taken by one person (i.e. my grandma). Although we asked for a small one, they decided for us that a medium one would be better and then, showed us an altered menu with sticker-covered prices.

We were angry and begin to reason with them. They refused any reasoning and begin to raise their voices. After which, their entire family clan walked out of their counters and kitchen and begin to chase us away (we have paid them RM24 for that dish). They were extremely abusive that we were worried that they will attack us. The ordeal only ended with we drove our cars in and fetched all our family members away.

To all visitors & potential visitors: Visit this restaurant at your own risk. They are blatantly dishonest and terribly abusive. Avoid this restaurant at all costs!

Tip: No matter which restaurant you go to in Kukup, remember to ask for the price of all dishes at the time of ordering. Agree on it before it is too late (when the receipt arrives).

Mouth Watering Pepper Crabs

I would not have done crab-eating any justice if I'd lumped this entry together with my other food posts. Why? Because the sole reason why one makes a crazy trip all the way to Kukup is to plunge one's teeth into fresh, lovely seafood. Well, we had the pepper crab and I totally love the taste. The meat could be more succulent though.

Favorite Dish: What else but crab, crab, crab!

Check Out The Spread!

After a long drive south to Kukup Laut, there was nothing more important than to fill our tummies. It'll be crazy to arrive at this southern-most village of the Malay Peninsula and not have seafood. Doing that will be like visiting Beijing, but not the Great Wall, or Siem Reap and not Angkor Wat. I believe you got my drift.

Well, the New Kukup Seafood Restaurant allows you the view of the jetty, and the sea breeze made eating at the restaurant a totally enjoyable experience. The food was served quickly and my colleagues and we thoroughly enjoyed the lunch.

Favorite Dish: The cereal prawns dish was so wonderful that we even cleared out the cereals! Other must trys are the steamed fish with radish, chilli mussels and lemon baby squid.

The soya bean drink is refreshing and tasty. From wat I heard, they are made during the weekends, maybe just for the tourist.

The beancurd is very popular. Freshly grinded, they are sold out very early in the morning.

There were four of us having this seafood meal at Kukup Causeway Restaurant.

We ordered the fried baby squid, pepper crab, steam fish and claypot toufu.

The food was so so and could not compete with other seafood places in Malaysia.

But overall the seafood served were fresh.

Restaurant's signboard

Once we drove into the restaurant area, the place was crowded with many people outside the various restaurants. The people called us to park our car outside their restaurants. Of course, you must be sure that you are eating at their restaurant before you park outside their place. As this was our first trip and we had no idea which restaurants are the better ones, we decided not to take the risk and drove away from this area. However, we could not find a parking space elsewhere nearby. In the end, left with no choice, we just drove in to the last restaurant at the end of the street - "New Kukup Restaurant" and got the "privilege" to be offered a parking space outside their restaurant.

Favorite Dish: The 3 of us ordered Black pepper crab, cereal prawns, fried rice, oyster egg etc at around RM 80. The food.. hmm.. considered average.. but don't set your standard too high as we found that they were not really that fresh.

Steamed Prawns at High King

If you're keen to try the steamed prawns ala High King Restaurant, there's no need to leave home. Just try this simple and rustic recipe at home. Of course, how delicious your dish will taste will depend on how fresh your prawns are

Ingredients
20 large tiger prawns with shell and whiskers
2 tablespoons light soy sauce
1 knob of ginger sliced julienne
1 teaspoon brandy (optional )

Wash prawns thoroughly and leave on shells and heads. In a bowl, mix the soy sauce, ginger, and brandy. Arrange the prawns on a dish, and cover with the soy sauce mixture.

Fill a pot or wok about 1/2 full with water. Place a steamer basket over the water, and bring water to a boil. Place the dish with the shrimp onto the steamer basket. Cover wok, and steam prawns for 10 minutes, until pink. Serve hot.

Beer and Crabs by the coast

Heard the term, " A Hungry Man is an Angry Man?" Well, its true for both sexes. By the time hubby and I arrived in Kukup Laut, we were both cross and ready to tear each other's eyes out with hunger. Fortunately for us, we spotted a nice big restaurant and decided on lunch over wrestling. And that we did.
After a couple of beers and settling down to a nice table by the water's edge, our sanity returned. Alas, despite the return to sanity, the seafood lunch didn't taste as good we had hoped. The steamed prawns, black pepper crabs were a tad limp and not coastal-village-hoppin' fresh. The only saving grace was the fried baby squid that came with our beers. It was crunchy, sweet and a perfect complement to gd ol' Tiger beer. A meal for two came up to RM67.83 or S$29.

TIP:Though I won't give this place high points for the food, I give it 2 thumbs up for its service and amenities. This is the only restaurant with a parking lot , a money changer and a sight-seeing tour agency! Also, if you were to drive there, you can park there the whole time while you're eating or sight-seeing. It's a big deal considering that parking in Kukup sucks big time in general.

Favorite Dish: The Fried Baby Squid which cost us RM$8. Cheap and delicious..
