Pill-box. "A small concrete fort: late 1917: Military colloquialism by June 1918. the resemblance of their shape to that of an oblong box for holding pills. " (Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English)

On the long drive towards Mersing, there are haunting images of WWII. Battered pill boxes are found all around the Johor State , intact with bullet and shrapnel holes. Some pill boxes are partially blown off. It's a silent testimony to the losing fight the British, Australian and Malayan soldiers put up to the impending Japanese forces as they cycled south to conquer Singapore. If you're keen to know more about pill boxes, click the link below for more details on these WWII relics.

You can see battered pill boxes enroute to Mersing from Singapore. These small concrete forts are a silent testimony to the harsh fight that that the British, Australian and Malayan soldiers put up to the Japanese invaders.

Examine the pill boxes closely and you'll see the scars of war. Here, Hubby points to holes made by flying bullets or shrapnel. The top half of this pill box was blown off. For more information on pill boxes, click on the link below.

    Just desserts
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cakes from any street vendor in Mersing make a colourful and arresting sight.
Golden cruchy puffs ("kari pap" ) filled with potato curry... Green skinned crepes filled with coconut drenched with palm -sugar (kueh dada ) , I could go on and on but there's little need to know all the names when all you need do is to point and eat.

Instead of having a sterile hi-tea buffet in an expensive hotel, make do with a cheaper and colourful one.

Check out the potpurri of cakes at any street vendor. Those Malay cakes and desserts make great tea time snakes. You'll be tempted to buy them all as each cake cost no more than 20sen.

    The " Rock" at Mersing
  • Tip Rating:
  • When the tide cedes in Mersing, you can take a walk on its flat mud banks and explore the rocky formations at the beach. An odd-shaped, rocky Batu Cawan Island is no exception. You can really walk close to it during low tides.

Resort at Sea with a Difference!
I never expect that such a place exist! For an avid mountain climber who prefer 'land' than 'sea', this place is an eye-opener and very relaxing. I wish I could bring my favourite CD, or storybooks and enjoy the sunrise, or sunset or just plain night breeze in the 'middle of the sea.' there will be a next time, God willing.....

for me, it's a chalet at the sea which have good facilities. they got free flow of F & B here, clean toilets, karaoke lounge and would do the BBQ stuff for you.

actually, this place is built with the purpose to cater for fishing-lovers. but, maybe their wives or family nag a lot about the long "missing-in-action" period from lands, thus somebody came up with this idea*wink*wink*. voila, we got a resort at sea! thus, the man could have some fishing activities, the kids and the mums could go for picnic, snorkeling or island-hopping nearby. there are activities for everyone!

the website would provide any additional information you need.
