    Sightseeing Mersing

by mizzzthanggg Updated Jun 6, 2005

Mersing is where you go to when you want to reach the islands off the states of Kuantan & Johor in Malaysia, e.g. Pulau Tioman, Pulau Besar, Pulau Rawa, Pulau Pulau Pulau...

Depending on the company you keep and whether you missed your ferry and how long you have to wait for the next one (ha...) you could either have a fantastic time here or a very mediocre experience of this lil local fishing village settlement.

The main things to do here if you came for the above are listed in the following tips.

Jewels near Mersing - Pulau Tioman

This has to be the most popular and visited island of all. Singaporeans love to go there and soak in the sun It's not a bad place to dive either.
I've been here and seen turtles swimming over here. Coral life however, is only so-so. It's way better at Bahara Rock, which is nearer further up north.

There's a beautiful island near Mersing where a volcano lies dormant. The mountain can be seen from far and that's why it's named "Tinggi" ( meaning tall in Malay).

    Jetty at Aur

I've been here several times to dive. The coral life here is simply fantastic. Also, there is a narrow channel here that allows for drift diving. They have a BBQ here every Saturday where you can indulge in truckloads of lamb, crab, chicken, beef ...
There are many dive operators in Singapore that will organise the trip from you. I'm not too sure about other reservation methods.
I've always booked my trip thru' my regular dive instructor

Forming a nice backdrop to Mersing town is Bukit Cantik which is located at the centre of the town. Masjid Jamik Mersing is also located on top of the hill.
