Snorkelling gear is available in the resort for 20rm a day....waters near the resort are clear enough to snorkel, though at low tide it's somewhat dangerous with sea urchins lying all over the seabed. Marine life is limited though. Boat trips to surrounding islands can be organised with the resort at 50rm per person.
Take a refreshing stroll along the beach on Pulau Besar. It is a wonderful experience to walk among these tall and slender trees and gaze up in awe at them against the blue sky.
You also get to share the beach with cows at some places as the locals here keep them.
Pulau Besar is an island off the town of Mersing in Johor. It has crystal clear waters and beautiful sunsets. Most of all, it is still relatively untouched by tourists !
The last time we were there over the Easter holidays, we simply jumped the queue at the Mersing jetty where everyone else was queueing up for the boat to the other famous Pulau Tioman. We felt so good and indeed, while we were on the island itself, it's as if the island is just for us and a few privileged ones !
Fondest memory: A trek overland to the other side of Pulau Besar brought us to a quiet cove where we picked glass-like stones from the pebble littered shore.
A most memorable experience was when we saw a stray cow on this part of the island. Seconds later, we realized we were staring at the eyes of another bull nearby, unaware that we had actually encroached upon its territory. Fear gripped us and we gingerly made our way away from it. And I was wearing red shorts !
