If your tour operator assures you of crystal clear water and white sandy beaches, he is most certainly over-exaggerating! It wasn't really what I had expected, the water is clear but isn't Maldives-sort if you know what I mean. The beach is deserted but not exactly fantastic. Most of the corals near the resort parts of the island are dead, so this is where island hopping comes in. It's about RM50 for a half day trip to the nearby inhabited islands where finally, you can actually snorkell and swim with the fishes in the sea to find Nemo, or Elmo, or Fabio, whatever his name is!
There was a path behind our room which actually leads to the waterfall hidden deep in the jungle. The trek there takes about 30-45mins depending on how fast you go. Bring a dagger or a small knife along in case a snake attacks you. I'm serious! That and also the fact that you might actually need one to cut your way through the overgrown bushes. Don't expect any proper pathways with fancy stones to guide you, this is a trek! But the path alone should tell you which way to go. I wouldn't exactly advise trekking alone, ask a staff of the resort before you head your way. There will normally be a guide available, most probably Bob. The trek rewards you with a spectacular view of the waterfall with a small lagoon. There is a larger waterfall where it is impossible to trek without guidance and probably too dangerous as well. And just to let you know, this is where your water comes from in the shower and it is absolutely freezing!
Pulau Tinggi is one of the few island off the east coast of Malaysia, together with other island such as the more famous Pulau Tioman, Pulau Sibu etc.
In order to reach the island, you have to take a boat ride near the town of Mersing in Johor state. The journey takes about 45 minutes.
My friends & myself truely enjoyed our short break at Pulau Tinggi. I think you can tell judging from this photograph :)
There are various water activities such as canoeing, swimming, snorkelling etc. It is a good place to get a group of friends together and have a good time.
The corals near the island are not so fantastic compared to other places. Nevertheless, you can go for snorkelling and swimming.
I remembered my friends & myself went for a jungle walk on the island to a waterfall located near the main resort.
I remembered staying at rustic but comfortable chalets on the island, but unfortunately cannot remember the name. There is a bigger resort on the island as well.
