Soon Huat Bah Kut Teh: Bah Kut Teh

by sklc

In Malaysia, Chinese herbal pork stew is known as Bah Kut Teh. 20-year old restaurant and still drawing tons of customers per day! The soup is not too oily, not too guilty, just the perfect pork stew you're looking for. Don't forget to ask for freshly chopped garlic to go with your meal. Bah Kut Teh and Assam Fish (steamed kembung fish with delicous spice topping)Jelly dessert

Cafe de Endau Rompin: Fried Sweet Potato

by bpacker

From the first look, you would think these are fries from Macdonald's right? Wrong! These are actually fried sticks of sweet potato and they're more delicious than the bland russet burbanks. They're sweet, crunchy and packed with loads of Vitamin A. The Orang Asli folks fried these snacks for us on one rainy Saturday night while we were in Lubuk Tapah camp and reader, we never had a more delicious supper than this! We cruched into the soft, crisp golden flesh and ate till our tummies could not hold any more..

Lubok Tapah Base Camp: Café D'EndauRompin

This is where we took all of our meals. Quite a good locale, it faces a bubbling river and is surrounded by trees so you usually, you can see a magpie or even a bigger bird swoosh by as you take your meals.

Lubuk Tapah Base Camp: Traditional Orang Asli Food: Fried Papaya!

by bpacker

It's not unusual to find cooked fruit in a South East Asian dish. Straits born Chinese use green papaya for their titek ( stew) dishes, malays use pineapple for their curries and the indians use mangoes for their pickles. So what more the indigenious tribespeople of Malaysia? I had fried papaya with Chilli in Endau Rompin National Park (centre dish) . And it was good though I was more used to eating green papaya salads and stews. Since the papaya was ripe, the flesh was sweet and the chilli gave a little kick to the dish.

Lubuk Tapah Base Camp: Traditional Orang Asli Food

by bpacker

The traditional Orang Asli dishes that they served at Lubuk Tapah Campsite at the Endau Rompin National Park was delicious, never mind even if they had a couple of odd ingredients here and there! I'm not joking, most of the ingredients are sourced from the jungle supermart and they include interesting edibles such as young curly fern leaves, rubber seeds, banana stems, lily stems and even squirrel meat. My favourite dish has to be the chicken that is cooked with cassava ( centre dish ) . At first sight, it looks gummy and disgusting but it turned out to be really tasty. The cassava absorbed the chicken juices and it made for a really flavourful paste with rice. Second on my list is the Bamboo Chicken Stew ( The yellow dish on the left) , it chicken pieces were succulent, redolent of the scent of bamboo and lemongrass.

Lubuk Tapah Base Camp, Endau Rompin: Cooking - Orang Asli Style

by bpacker

Now, just before my team mates and I entered Endau Rompin, Johor's notoriously rustic National Park, my group leader joked that we were going to suffer for 3 days in the jungle. "Eat up ! " he cautioned when we were dining at Bekok, a small sleepy town at the outskirts of the park, " This is going to be your last good meal! After that, you will be eating cold food! " The idiots that we were, we stupidly believed him and stuffed our faces with the coffeeshop food before us...Well, I'm glad to say that we had been tricked. The food at Lubuk Tapah Campsite at Endau Rompin National Park was even better the grub found in the town. For the first time in my life, I tasted traditional jungle dishes prepared by the Orang Aslis* . Everything was good and as all the ingredients used were sourced from the wild and the dishes were cooked using simple but interesting methods. If you take a look at the...

Shi Wei Fu Chinese Restaurant: One of the Best in Segamat

by Wild_Orchid

Practically an institution in Segamat, Shi Wei Fu restaurant is popular not only with Johor locals, but also with Singaporeans who may drive for 2+ hours just to eat here.Unlike most other restaurants in the small town of Segamat, Shi Wei Fu has more ambiance - proper table clothes, waitresses dressed in uniform and cold air-conditioning. Best of all, the food is excellent and pricing very competitive. (Prices used to be higher but seems to have come down in the past two years due to the rather sluggish economy)The waitresses, whether old or young all wear uniforms of white blouses, black and rather short skirts and sneakers that don't match. You must try the Crispy Smoked Duck that is unique to this restaurant. (I have tasted a similar dish only in Bali's Bebek Benggil Restaurant and this one is actually better.) - RM35 per duckFried rice topped with anchovies-a deceptively simple...

Seng Kee Restaurant: Call of the Wild!

by Wild_Orchid

You may have heard the saying that Chinese will eat anything under the sun that is on four legs, except the tables and chairs. Well, it is basically true. As a Chinese myself, I should know!At Seng Kee Restaurant, the speciality is "exotic "animal meat, but in fact all their food is very good. Exotic meat includes deer meat, flying fox, iguana, turtle, etc. This restaurant has been around for a while but lately, they bought their own premises and now they occupy 2 shop-lots. They have an air-conditioned section and an al'fresco section. Lately, the air-conditioned section has been used for weddings and it also has a karaoke sound system and stage. For a small town, this restaurant is tops in ambiance, however, the air-conditioning did mean that my hair didn't smell that great when I got home. The food is simply too delicious. If you don't favour exotic meat, you can order the normal...
