Screwing Your Brains, Orang Asli style

by bpacker

Now what can you do on rainy nights in Endau Rompin? Nightwalks will not be accompanied by leeches so the best thing to do is to screw your brains, Orang Asli style;p I'm not joking. These local tribesman have a myraid of witty games and toys and it'll take a while to figure out how to loop and unloop these simple bamboo toys. These toys are also available for sale if you need to screw your brains at home.Where to buy Orang Asli toysLubuk Tapah Base Camp.

Playing with the River Crossing @ Lubuk Tapah

by bpacker

Other than Canoeing, you can also play with the inflatable river crossing at Lubuk Tapah Camp in Endau Rompin. Just hoist the rope to get to the other side. The whole time when I was there, many young boys love to use it as a base to jump in the middle of the river. There's also a suspension bridge there for more horseplay.

Treks in Endau Rompin

by bpacker

There are lots of challenging treks in Endau Rompin and at the end of each trek lies a beautiful waterfall. Take a look at the board and guess which trek my team members choose? Hint: Some of them have scaled Mount Kinabalu, experience sunrise from Mount Fuji and wandered the plains of the Serengeti. I've done neither of those expeditions so I was in for trouble..Things to take note of:Some of these treks are notoriously steep and treks can get tricky with a couple of fallen logs. Make sure you go with a guide!

Tubing and Canoeing @Lubuk tapah

by bpacker

We reached Lubuk Tapah base camp after driving over elephant poo for one hour from Bekok to Endau Rompin National Park. And what was the first thing that my group did after reaching there and cheking into their chalets? Canoeing and drifting in big rubber tubes! Guess the stress of the drive got to them and they needed to release some steam. It was fun. The waters in front of Lubuk Tapah were shallow enough for safe fun like these.

Insure yourself before going to Endau Rompin

by bpacker

We entered Endau Rompin National Park by the West side via Bekok Town and it was an ardous 1 hour journey. Sure, it was fun traversing across mud tracks and watching big mounds of elephant poo whiz pass us but the journey was a bumpy one. Definitely not for the faint hearted. The jeep SLALOMed for most of the way since the tyres did not have enough traction and the wooden bridges were rickety and narrow, making no room for mistakes. On top of that, there were steep trails that looked too steep for comfort. I was excited but the ride made hubby green in the face. The barf bag was his contant companion for the trip. Things to take note ofAn entry permit is needed if you're driving independently here. Check with www.johorparks.com . Also, buy an accident insurance or barf bag before going there, you can't be too sure what will happen..

Taking a Commuter Train from Singapore to Bekok

by bpacker

My Endau Rompin journey started from Singapore's Keppel Railway Station. We left the train station at about 1030am in the morning on a commuter train for a sleepy Johorian town called Bekok. It was a little bonus that our train seats were comfy and that the carriages were clean and air-conditioned for a reasonable priced ticket. We by-passed forested trails, waved at chagrined car drivers as we passed the insane car queues at the Causeways. The only queue that we encountered was at the railway immigration department and it lasted for maybe 10min or so.Price of Train TicketRM6Time and Schedule of the TrainSee websiteAdvantage of Taking Train from Singapore to M'siaBy passing the Causeway queuesQuirky things to take note ofThere's some disagreement with the S'pore/M'sia authorities on the rail station. So you'll leave the M'sian owned station only to be received by the S'pore station in...

Food (Takeway) Haven

by muddybok

There are many streets in Muar specialised in takeaway stalls that sell almost anything fit for human consumption, and mostly oily. May be not so good for locals to eat them all the time, but we tourists are the most daring ones. We eat so long we manage to find time & foods. So, just unleash your appetite in Muar and you will never regret it.

Herbal Tea

by muddybok

Since young, my parents always buy us herbal tea drinks after the shopping session at Muar's malls due to long parking distance. My dad will normally order and wanted us to drink liang-teh to "cool" down the effect of the heat. Some additional Chinese medicines can be added in case you have serious sore throat and just simply want to give yourself some Chinese supplements. The tea sellers will take 1-2 tea spoons full of powdery medicine and dilute them in you tea. Of course most of these additional "++" are bitter.Chinese sayings, the medicines that taste bitter are good medicines.

Muar State Railway (no longer operation)

by muddybok

It was first planned to be part of the railway connecting Johor Bharu and Gunung Pulai, but the effort is futile as it failed to render any service. Thus, Muar was the first district to have its own railway service. The construction of Muar Railway was completed in 1890 and soon giving transportation service from Jalan Sulaiman in Bandar Maharani to Parit Jawa. The service was then extended to Sungai Pulai in 1914.The railway service which was called the Muar State Railway not only used to transport passengers but also agricultural produce. In its effort to promote public education, Muar Railway gives free rides to Malay student of Bandar Maharani English School. Muar Railway has made a lot of contribution to transportation and agricultural industry, its service however has to be discontinued in 1918 due to inevitable circumstances.

Toast of the Kluang Town

by muddybok

Kluang Station Cafe use only pure de-husked coffee beans without addition of corns & other regular local coffee substances. The bean was roasted by shop owner and family to give that personal touch to their signature coffee. The coffee roasting formula has been passed down for 3 generations and it's not going to end here.Long before I write about this, Kluang Station canteen is already so famous and they can do with or without me writing about it. MAS' Going Places wrote about it and SIA's most recent in flight magazine will be featured the coffee shop as well. You may wonder whether the coffee shop is really live up to its name. Let me tell you, the whole coffee tasting experience I had here is quite difficult to fully describe. I may left out many other things that you must visit yourself to piece the missing parts. For full detail, please click here for better coffee tasting experience.
