Alor Star is one of the major city in northern Malaysia, hence getting to Alor Star is not a problem at all. There a few ways you can get there i.e. by air, road, and rail. MAS and AirAsia run frequent flight service to Alor Star from KL (45mins), about toal of 3 to 4 flights daily. By car/bus, Alor Star well linked by the North South Highway and the Federal Route 1. It takes about 5 hours if you drive on the highway and bus takes about 6 hours. By train, Langkawi express is the training travelling north from KL, it will takes 8 hours, althought is a bit long compares to car or bus, the sceneray you get will be worth it.
Getting around town is a bit inconvinient. There are two bus station in this city. The main bus station which is located slightly outside the city near the Mergong Industrial Area is the main station where all the buses from outstation will stop and from there the local bus service will be available. The city bus service may not be the ideal way to travel around unless you really want to cut cost on your expenses.
Bus service is available from from Alor Setar to Kuala Kedah. Ferry terminal to Langkawi is situated in this small fishing village town.
The route is run by HBR Group of Companies. Usually there is a sign in front of the bus - could be hand written - indicating "Shahab Perdana", "Pekan Rabu" and "Kuala Kedah". The bus is not air conditioned and its white in colour.
The route starts at Shahab Perdana (Alor Setar's bus terminal) and it makes some stops around the town at such places as former Alor Setar's General Hospital (now Kota Setar District Health Office), Pekan Rabu, Simpang Kuala, Telok Chengai, Telok Kechai, Batas Paip, Kuala Kedah. The route ends at Kampung Nelayan. You would have to tell the conductor where is your destination and the conductor will let you know how much is the fare. Be as specific as possible. Most of them are nice, even though they don't speak much English and will help you to make sure that you arrive at your correct stop if you can tell them where exactly you want to alight.
From Kuala Kedah to Terminal Shahab Perdana (Alor Setar)
If you have come to Kuala Kedah from Langkawi and want to take a bus downtown, walk around the car park in front of the ferry jetty building and wait for the bus beside the road, at the same side with the building (do not cross the road). The road is marked as "Jalan Tok Pasai" in Google Map. There is no bus stop outside of the jetty building. You will have to flag the bus down when you see it coming.
From Terminal Shahab Perdana to Kuala Kedah
Wait for the bus at the local bus waiting area at the back section of the bus terminal building. The area is behind the intercity express bus queue area.
The bus terminal is not exactly located in the town center. If you want to walk around town and see some interesting sites, it is advisable that you alight at Pekan Rabu.
The service runs daily and it starts at 6.30 am on weekdays. On Friday, Saturday and public holidays, the service starts at 7.00 am. The last bus is at 10.00 pm. But do not rely too much the accuracy of the bus schedule.
