Favorite thing: The weather October can be very changeable on Langkawi. My favorite resort hotel is the Pelangi Beach. I agree that a car rental is a good way to get around on Langkawi. For best rates i use www.asiaoz.com or www.nongasia.com who I use regular for Malaysia hotels. Do not expect much in the way of Duty Free shopping in Kuah, not much at all.
The island is quite but very pleasant, driving around the island is a good way to see at it's best.
The Mutiara Bay is also a nice resort hotel.

Favorite thing: Because Kedah is very flat, you can see Kedah Peak (Gunung Jerai) from most of part of Kedah State. It can also be seen from Gurney Drive or Esplanade in Penang Island.
So when you visit Kedah, you will also remember the Kedah peak besides the rice fields there. Both goes hand in hand. The Kedah flag and football team has the yellow and green colors which seems to echo the yellow ripe rice and the green Kedah peak.

Favorite thing: Whether you are taking the train or driving up to Alor Setar through the rice fields, if you look at the telegraph wires along the side of the rice fields overlooking streams, you will see many endemic and migratory birds perched on the wire waiting for a perfect dive to catch an insect.
Most brilliant are different species of Kingfishers.
It is an easy way of bird watching but if you are driving, do not bird watch and drive.
Also along this low lying area, it is prone to flooding even on the PLUS highway and some times the farmers burn the rice stalks and visibility can suddenly dropped because of the smoke blown across the road.
