One thing to take note when you're going to a foreign place is the weather. Esp in Langkawi, there's really no point going there to trek the hills and waterfalls in rainy weather, is there? On the other hand, if you're going there to dive and you're a keen fan of drift diving, the rain won't really pose a problem.
Here's the weather chart for your convenience..

    Typical Annual Weather Pattern:

    Temp Rain Sun
deg C deg F mm inch hours
    January 33 92 35 1 9
    February 33 92 35 1 9
    March 33 91 105 4 8
    April 32 90 190 8 9
    May 31 88 240 10 6
    June 31 88 235 9 6
    July 31 87 255 10 6
    August 30 86 290 12 7
    September 30 86 310 12 4
    October 30 86 340 14 5
    November 30 86 220 9 6
    December 31 87 85 3 8

It was actually quite dry when I was in Langkawi, so dry that there wasn't much water left in the waterfalls! Grrr....

    traffic lights
  • Tip Rating:
  • Langkawi Island is full of strange surprises but one thing which I notice was the traffic lights. The main traffic lights in town is not traditional traffic lights, it also shows the timer. You could see that when the signal will become red and when it will become green again. It was something strange for me.

I'll encourage anyone who is visiting Langkawi for the first time to try the cable car.

The single most perfect moment in my trip occured during my cable ride.
I saw 2 sea eagles circling the balmy blue skies and felt so free and happy.

Hmm... the sleepy blue seas and skies, the lazy "island" feeling where time is non-existent, etc etc

    Good Internet Service
  • Tip Rating:
  • I mentioned a poor Internet Service in my Warning and Danger tips (SBR).

But I found a good one! This is a nicely run internet place, unlike SBR. The machines are in decent condition and the guy running the place seems to understand networks and how to configure them.

You are also welcome to plug in your own lap top if you have one.

It may be a little tricky to find. Along Cenang Beach Road is a Fujifilm place and opposite there is a small road going away from the beach. The internet place is located just up this road.

    Pulau Langkawi: 20-23 Dec 2004
  • Tip Rating:
  • This was a pre-Christmas trip staying at The Andaman on Datai Bay which was SOO great that we just stayed there most of the time and didn't really venture out to see the rest of Langkawi... but we did go on the cable car trip up Gunung Mat Chinchang which was nice, and we had dinner at a restaurant in the middle of a mangrove forest... very mysterious and romantic. Please see the rest of my travel tips for details.

    Another deserted beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Finding this small beach used mainly by locals. I'm not sure of the name but the location is very close to the Ibrahim Hussein Foundation Museum, which can be found on tourist maps.
When we got there the beach was deserted apart from a few locals and a troop of macaques. The water is warm and inviting with no jellyfish. A small stall is located on the beach where you can buy drinks and fresh fruit.

    Cleanliness
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cenang, and from what I have seen of the rest of Langkawi, is very clean. The resorts clean up their stretch of beach every morning so that the sand is free of debris, flotsam and jetsam. On the roads the only mess is falling coconuts and palm fronds.

    Dataran Lang (Eagle Square)
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) This is the latest addition to Langkawi's famous landmarks. Located nearby the Kuah Jetty is an ideal spot for leisurely walks and a tranquil setting for dinning in the cool evenings. The main attraction of the square is the splendid statue of the reddish brown eagle in a state of flight. According to local folklore, Langkawi derived its name from the eagle or 'lang' short for 'healing'. In old Malay 'kawi' signify reddish brown - hence Langkawi means reddish brown eagle. This majestic eagle is strategically positioned to welcome visitors to Langkawi
