Peter, the guy in action in the pic below, was our tour guide for this eco-adventure. We went by boat to the fish farm where our canoes were waiting for us. Peter tells us about the history of the ecology in Langkawi. Also about what to expect, tips & warning when we go on our canoes later.

    We're ready for more action!

We're all ready to go! Hats - checked! Sunblock - checked! Sunnies - checked! Water bottle - checked! Oars - checked! Hehe This is it! This is the mangrove swamp in the northern side of Langkawi. It was tiring but definitely worth all the exertion. You think I will develope fantastic biceps after 5 hours of oaring on this canoe? Hmmm... On the way we managed to see the feeding of the eagles. Wicked!

    Peter getting all animated.

During the course of this canoeing trip, Peter explains the special features, phenomenons and animals/insects which we come across as we paddle along the great swamp. Becareful about the tides because we got ourselves lost for a bit when we lost the water channel due to the rising tide as the afternoon drew on.

    Malaysia Book Village

by kyoub Written Jan 16, 2006

The one place that we went and didn't get a picture of was the Kampung Buku Malaysia. It is the first and only book village in South East Asia. It sits in among a lush green forest of trees at the foot of Gunung Raya, the highest peak on the island.
The various houses in the village are stocked with a great variety of new books on numerous topics and languages as well as second-handbooks. Most are written in the Malaysian language but we did find a few in English.

    burau island

Burau island is a little island off the coast near Burau Bay. You can reach it from the resort, and on foot - only at low tide; so do find out the tide timetables.
It's quite interesting because the people at the hotel have built a path along and inside the island, with signs explaining all about the existing ecosystem. If you are into birdwatching this is the place to be. The island is is a roosting place for migratory birds.

  • GO BACK IN TIME....Visit Tuba Island, off Langkawi

    by west_islander Written Aug 31, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

If you are in Langkawi, do consider visiting Tuba Island. Although only about 2 miles from the main island of Langkawi, Tuba is relatively less developed, offering tourist the chance to experience the charm of Langkawi yesteryears. Getting there is easy as there are regular taxi boats services from Kuah Jetty at RM4-RM5/pax one way. Basic transport service is available for round island trip or 'town' transfer from Tuba Jetty. Should one wish to stay overnight, there are 3 small chalets around : Tok Janggut's being the best while the other 2 are operated by locals 'Pulau Twobar' operators. Else, try Tuba Homestay (ask for Pak Arck@ Abu Bakar Man) The best produce of the island is FRESH and relatively cheap shrimp, crabs and cuttlefish. Give it a try......

The spot to watch sunset, under the shade of trees
    2 more images

If you want some privacy while enjoying the sunset by the seaside, you can pack some food, and beers, park your car by the beach beside the airport runway on the way to Pantai Cenang. Watch the sunset while drinking / eating.

You can also pack some food to Pantai Pasir Tengkorak along the way to Datai. Sit under the tree by the beach and eat while enjoying the beautiful view.

This tip is recommended for people who don't like the hot sun and crowds. You could visit the 2 places even in the afternoon when the sun is shining brightly. Both places have trees, where you can hide from the sun.

Down the road from the Awana Hotel is a very special place. A place where you can go to see Hornbills. They come by there early morning and at dusk. You can see them in the trees for several minutes before they move on.

    TELAGA TUJUH waterfall.

Remember to rent a motorbike to explore this little island. There are few water falls in this island. The one worth exploring would be TELAGA TUJUH. it is sited in the north-western corner of Pulau Langkawi, so named because its cascading waters is broken by a series of seven natural pools. The surrounding lush green forest of the waterfall adds a mystical touch to the natural splendour.

    Remember to bring your swimsuit!!

    Tanjung Rhu Beach
    2 more images

One of Langkawi's best beaches is Tanjung Rhu which is located 22km from Kuah town. A scenic area with limestone outcrops.

On the way to the beach, you can see a stretch of road with monkeys roaming freely and some tourist or photography enthusiasts even stopped by to snapped some photos of the monkeys.

I like the serenity & cleanliness of this beach. Wave is gentle for swimming. A good spot to view sunset too with limestone outcrops as backdrop.

    Dive in!

If you staying at the Tanjung Rhu you must go on the cycle to the waterfall with the hotel guide.. Its a bit long but goes thru this cool swamp like area.. There's a bit of a hill to go up towards the waterfall and then there's a small trek.. But on a hot day its all worth it cos the water is amazing.. Very refreshing!
