    Check out the funky lezards

While lying on my hammock, I noticed this funky lizard making his way very quickly up the palm tree. Everytime he moved the shiny colours on his body kept changing. He seemed very slimmy as well as if he just dipped into oil.... Have a look at the photo :o)

Funky colours :o) Funky walk :o)

Cave at Northeast part of island

No idea what this cave was called but it appears the only way you can gain access to it is by boat. Northeast part of the island. We took the dinghy in and walked through the cave and it opened up into a mangrove jungle.

    Asian Village

by xxangelxx Written Dec 29, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a small village that you can drive to (although other transport is available). It has cafes and quite a few shops selling local wares, paintings, souvenirs, fans and such like. There are items to suit every price range, but the heat can be overpowering at times so make sure to take a bottle of water with you.

    Find a better beach

by ahcoln Updated Apr 27, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are quite many beach in the Island. Pantai Cenang is the most popular beach among the rest, but also most crowded. If you like water sport, you should able to find it here. But if you are looking for some quiet beaches, i will recomend you Pantai Kok (we stayed near to Pantai Kok) & Pantai Rhu. There are less happening on these beaches, but you can enjoy better with the beach that appears like your private property.

Go bird watching - alone or in tours

by akkipaa Written Jan 11, 2013

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Take your camera and start hunting. There are a lot of birds in your hotel and beach area, it's easy to start and you get some practice for worse circumstances. As you can see, I am not pro and this trip was my first with this camera and all setups were not familiar to me. The last picture tells the truth, start from birds in trees or yard, flying objects make it more difficult. In the last one, all setups failed, focus did not succeed, panorama wrong only the bird was beautiful, unfortunately seem to be more airplane than a bird.

There are more birds and species in the nature, but the circumstances get even worse. But it's always worth of trying, some day you can get a picture of the year.

The second picture is my favourite bird, it's Black-naped Oriole, common in Malaysia and in Finland we have Eurasian Golden Oriole called Kuhankeittäjä (wild translation: Pike-perch cooker, name is coming from sound, were can here when it sing: Pike-perch is boiling :)

This might be Black-capped Kingfisher? Black-naped Oriole Some Hornbill?

Public Beach Changing and Shower Rooms

by machomikemd Written Jun 5, 2014

you might be staying at the more upscale beach resorts in Pantai Tengah or further walk away from Pantai Cenang or even at Tanjung Rhu or Pantai Kok, but still, all beaches are public properties and even if your at the beachfront of a luxury hotel resort, they cannot force you to go away.

and also you will see two story life guard tower concrete buildings that are also public beach changing, restroom and shower rooms of which you only pay a nominal fee of RM 1 for changing clothes or relieving yourself and extra RM 1 to take a shower. they have separate changing and shower and toilet rooms for men and women and are open from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm everyday

Eat Al Fresco Lunch at Tanjung Rhu

by machomikemd Written Jun 6, 2014

Tanjung Rhu, a long stretch of fine white sand beach in Northern Langkawi and with views of the Northern Langkawi Islands and Ko Tarutao in Thailand, is a favorite among locals to do swimming and sports activities and even to eat out al fresco style at the beach as there are hardly any tourists going here. And Since we were on a Private Tour, we requested our guide dean that we eat al fresco lunch at the beach of which our tour guide bought us packed meals at Pantai Cenang of which we brought to Tanjung Rhu. there are a few food stalls at the public beach that sells local snacks and beverages and also young coconut juice (kelapa) of which we brought at RM 4 per piece and softdrinks at RM 2 a can.

there are hardly any people when we were here and only a few locals who bought cars and tents.

after lunch we proceeded to Pantai Tengah for the Island Hopping tour, which is a good 35 minute drive away.

    Pulau Singa Besar

by machomikemd Written Jun 6, 2014

the island is famous for nature tripping so that many backpackers have overnight camping trips to the island to go bird watching of various species of birds and sea eagles and also try the various small white beach coves scattered around the island and there are wooden foothpaths that goes to and from one part to the other in the island, be aware that they don't have the bare necessities like potable water, bathrooms and kitchens here. so be ready with all the basic necessities and creature comforts you need in spending time here in the island.

the Island Hopping tours also stop in front of the Island to put scraps of chicken meat in the water to entice the differentr species of Sea Eagle to feed as for tourist like us to take picures and videos.

Bats at a Cove in Pulau Dayang Bunting

by machomikemd Written Jun 7, 2014

If you did not book the Mangrove tour where you go inside limestone caves filled with bats and guano, don't despair! you can still view bats in coves/caves in the Island Hopping tour!

5 minutes before the jetty to pulau dayang bunting, there is a small cove where bats converge and your speed boat would take you there to see the bats for an additional 2 ringgit per person and you will stop there for about 2 minutes so that you can take pictures and videos of the bats before proceeding to the jett to the main island and to tasik dayang bunting.

    Koh Tarutao

by machomikemd Written Jun 11, 2014

Pulau Langkawi is the Northern Most Island Group of Peninsular Malaysia at the Andaman Sea and Koh Tarutao is the Southernmost Island of Thailand in the Andaman Sea and both these Islands are only separated by 5 kilometers of sea. you can even see Koh Tarutao at a distance from the Viewpoint of Langkawi Sky Cab or the beaches of Tanjung Rhu and the sea above Kilim Geopark (really closed up if using an optical ultra zoom camera).

but it is hard to go to and back both these Islands are they are in different countries!

you need to ride a ferry from kuah jetty point to Satun in Southern Thailand Mainland and bring your passport and then get another boat ride to Koh Tarutao and it takes about a day to travel! (ferries to and from Satun to Langkawi and Satun to Koh Tarutao have fixed sailing times!)

they also have different time zones! sunrise is 7:20 am in Langkawi and 6:20 am in Koh Tarutao as Thailand is 1 hour behind Malaysia.
