    Little India: Great Indian Food

by catkin Written Sep 20, 2004

    Little India

This small unassuming restaurant in the Pantai Cenang area serves some of the best Indian food I have ever tasted.
There restaurant only has maybe half a dozen tables and you get served on a first come forst served basis regardless of whether you have booked for a specific time. We waited about three quarters of an hour after ordering before our food came but it was worth the wait.
They only serve beer and soft drinks here so if you want wine you have to "bring your own".and they will amke a small corkage charge of around 15 RM. We thought that was per bottle but we opened 2 and did not get charged any extra.

Favorite Dish: The butter chicken and the lamb rogan josh were my favourites.

Bon Ton Resort Restaurant (Nam restaurant): Excellent Malay Food!

    having dessert at the Nam

The Bon Ton is perhaps the best restaurant in Langkawi. It's part of the Bon Ton Resort, a small but charming resort situated a 5 minute from Pantai Cenang and a 10 minute from the Langkawi airport.

The restaurant is awsome, we had dinner outside in a delightful setting. The food was amazing, very well presented and excellent! The desserts were to die for also. It's not cheap but it was well worth every cent. It was the best meal I had during my stay in Malaysia.

If you plan to go there I advise to book a table as the restaurant is very well known and has very good feedback and it's not large.

Favorite Dish: The Steamed Apple, Macadamia and Butterscotch Pudding dessert. It's delicious!

Barn Thai: The restaurant in the Mangrove

by catkin Updated Apr 4, 2011

    Barn Thai

This is a totally unique restaurant in the middle of a Mangrove swamp.
We arrived at this restaurant by boat but if you arrive by road you have to be prepared for the 400 metre walk though the Mangrove swamp. On your way to the restaurant you can stop to look at the mangrove wildlife and birds. Being in the mangrove swamp you are likely to be plagued with the many mosquitos which buzz annoyingly around, but a good mosi spray should help.
The restaurant itself is lofty and built mainly from teak wood so teaditionally Thai.
If you visit in the evenings you may be entertained with jazz music.

Favorite Dish: Although we had a set lunch on our particular tour-we did have an additional Thai green chicken curry-wonderful!!

Barn Thai Langkawi: Dining In The Mangroves

walkway through the mangroves, barn thai

Set deep within the mangroves of Langkawi, the restaurant is accessible only by a 450 metre wooden walkway with gazebos and seats along the walkway for photo opps or to observe the natural wonders and wildlife. You can also take a tour through the mangroves by boat.

Great ambience, very romantic and mysterious. At low tide, the roots of the trees are exposed and sometimes they resemble those tree-like Ent characters out of Lord of The Rings!

Favorite Dish: Admittedly, the food is just okay, not brilliant. But the setting is great.

I don't recommend the Seafood & Glassnoodle Salad but I had some prawn rolls which were quite nice.

    Yummy curry dishes!

At first, we thought it's an expensive restaurant (open-air). Its setting gave us this feeling. Then we read the menu. The prices of dishes varied, according to the type of food you ordered (more expensive for seafood, of course), ranging from RM2.5 to RM6 per dish. With the explanation of the patient watier, we ordered several dishes. It's really a great dinner and the food was so yummy!!! I really miss it!

    Favorite Dish: We ordered:
    - fish masala
    - chicken tandoori
    - beef masala
    - fried squid
    - mixed vegetables
    - cheese naan
    - brown rice
    - mixed juice

All tasted great!!!! esp. the fish, the beef, the cheese naan and mixed juice!

The whole table of food costed us around RM35! What a great dinner!

Orkid Ria: Seafood on the island

    Tiger prawns in special sauce.

As recommended by a local magazine, we had our 4th dinner at Orkid Ria - a seafood restaurant run by Chinese. According to our observation, the restaurant was very popular with tourists, not only Chinese but also foreigners. Some people were waiting for tables when we were having dinner. It's advisable to reserve a table.

    Favorite Dish: We ordered:
    - tiger prawns in special sauce
    - sea cucumber with mixed vegetables
    - abalone clams
    - fried kankung (vegetables) in Malay style
    - Indian fried noodles
    - apple juice (green apples!) and orange juice (totally 4 glasses)

All the dishes were yummy esp. the prawn and the noodles. The dinner costed us around RM110.

The captivating interor of Barn Thai Langkawi

Barn Thai is built in the heart of a mangroove swamp. Gotta walk approximately 500 metres of a wooden walkway to reach the restaurant. A wonderful experience especially at night. Rather peacuful adn mystically. And, sitting right amidst the mangroove swamp, Barn Thai seems rather unreal. To me, its quite a heavenly surrounding. But, food wasn't that good and rather costly. Anyway, it's worth a go. It's a memorable experience. And, free transportation is available to chauffer you from your lodging to Barn Thai. But call a day earlier.

A typical chinese by the road seafood restaurant. Very friendly boss that is able to commune in english. We had black pepper crab, butter prawns, fish with special sauce, their special chicken wing set, vegetable and hot plate tofu. It was so good. I would recommend their butter prawns, a must try! And for six person the bill run up to guess what? RM178 including drinks and stuff. Which was like RM30 per person. Cheap and good! There's ample parking space outside the restaurant along the grass patches, and there's a rather clean toilet plus an area for you to wash your hands after eating those black pepper crab! Opens from 12pm to 12am.

Favorite Dish: Everything is good, must try would be their butter prawns, pepper crab and hot plate tofu.
