Rented Car
We rented a car from an agent near the Kuah Jetty.

We were driving around Kuah town searching for the nearest Petronas petrol station when the car broke down!! We ran out of fuel after just 10 minutes!!

We got even frustrated when we were unable to reach the mobile numbers and office telephone numbers stated in the receipt.

Luckily for my quick thinking, my hubby hitched a tourist bus to the Jetty to look for the car rental agent again. Felt very thankful for the friendly bus driver who told my hubby a few tips of Langkawi, my hubby gave him a big tip!

Finally, my hubby came back with the agent & a bottle of petrol, enough for us to drive to the nearest petrol station! Whew! what a start to our 2nd holiday in Langkawi!

Moral of this story : check the telephone numbers stated in the receipt or namecard of car rental company. Also check with them the nearest petrol station!!! :P

    Langkawi by sea
Ferry service from Kuala Perlis, Perlis to Pulau Langkawi
Price : Adult RM15.00, Kid RM10.00 (kids below 4 will not be chargeable)
(it is advisable to get your kid a seat as the seats are quite close to each other, quite cramp if they are naping on your lap - mother's point of view!)
    Trip takes about 45 minutes.
Ventilation in the ferry is quite cooling but quite hot near the window & under the sun (wear a hat, no curtain or tinting on the window glass)
Schedules : at least a ferry every hour

Rent A Car at the Airport
Its recommended to drive around Langkawi Island. Island map is distributed for free once you touch down. Car rental counters are easily accessible at the Airport. Ask for discount for car rentals should you stay longer than 3 nites. Got a nifty 4 seater Iswara 1.3 for only RM 30 per day. Rented for 6 days. Worth it as I was there with another 2- My Parents.

Motorbike is the best way to drive around
It is better to rent a motorbike to drive around, since langkawi isnt a very small island to walk around. And its not cheap to use taxi, because they dont have taxi meter! You have to bargain for the prices.
Renting a motorbike cost us 30RM/day - 24 hours with 50RM deposit in advance. You'll get ur deposit back when you return the motorbike.

    Ferry Penang - Langkawi
Ferry from Penang to Langkawi cost you 50RM per person and it needs about 3 hours, with one quick stop in pulau payar.
It's small but comfortable and fast!

Take an early air asia flight
We we alerted by air asia with SMS on the last day of our stay in Langkawi that our flight was delayed by 2 hours. We have to reschedule our plan for the day again. Upon reaching the airport, we are told that the flight is again delayed for another hour. We are indeed the last group of people who depart from the Langkawi airport. Poor the airport workers who have to wait until we depart before they call it a day. So, never take the last flight on Air Asia as the delay they accumulated for the day is thrown to your last flight.

not only an airport, an an exhibition site too
Langkawi International Airport, located at Padang Matsirat, is not simply an airport - it is also the location for the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition. It's not a large airport but it's a beautiful one.

Shoppingwise... it's a bit dodgy: I have the feeling that those designer suitcases sold all over are just locally-made fakes. But do take a look at the strange thing the Chinese herbalist sells, right opposite the foreign exchange (best rates in Langkawi, btw).

Airlines flying to Langkawi, as far as I know are:
    - Air Asia (from Bangkok and KL)
    - Malaysia Airlines (Penang, KL, Singapore, Johor Bahru)
    - Silk Air (Singapore)

Take the KTMB train to Langkawi
I am a train freak as i might have mentioned elsewhere in this travel page. You should try at least once in a life time a trip to Langkawi on board a KTMB first class berth. It is worth the experience on board this luxurious berth.

The journey starts ar Kuala Lumpur Sentral station at 8:00pm and ends at Kuala Perlis station at around 8:00 am. Then you'd have to take a cab to Kuala Perlis Jetty and be one of the early birds to board the ferry and arrive in Langkawi. Therefore you'll miss the busy Kuala Perlis and Langkawi Jetty which can be a cause of annoyance and ruin your vacation.

If you're interested to rent a car or purchase islands or snorkeling trips from Kuala Perlis, the early morning would be the best time of day to trade as most probabluy you'd be their first customer.

So enjoy your rail trip to Langkawi!

    Rent-a-car while in Kuala Perlis
While waiting for the ferry to Langkawi in Kuala Perlis i was approached by a man selling tours and car rentals. I was sceptical at first but was talked into buying a snorkeling tour and renting a car. I was lucky as it was not a scam.

We managed to get a good Proton Iswara and made full use of the car while on the island. We didn't pay much though and since Langkawi was small we did not even have to refuel along our stay day - just imagine the amount of to and fro travelling we did on the island! I guess it was cheaper renting a RM75 car for the whole duration of the trip rather than paying for a cab which might cost RM10 per trip.

The car was sent to ourr Langkasuka Hotel on the first day and collected from the airport when leaving.
