To get to Langkawi, you either can take Bus or Train to Alor Star from Kuala Lumpur. The bus trip gonna take you about 6 to 7 hours from Kuala Lumpur, and been advice to take night bus, or night train, so you can get to the distination early in the morning. Once you reach to Alor Star bus station, you should get a taxi to get you to the jetty at Kuala Kedah. If you take a bus to Kuala Kangsar, you should do the same thing as taking bus to Kedah. If you taking bus to Kuala Perlis, the trip from the jetty is very near to Langkawi Island, it only take you about 45 mins rather than take a boat from Kuala Kedah.
Bus Station:-
Kuala Lumpur - Pudu Raya
Kedah - Alor Star
Perlis - Kuala Perlis

When flying to Langkawi check out AirAsia.com. It is a low-cost Airline based out of Kuala Lumpur. We flew Air Asia from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi. It is cheap but their are no thrills and you have to pay for your drinks and food.

Langkawi is serviced by a small but adequate airport. No chance of getting lost. Check out the shops on your way out for some last minute tourist items. Immigration and baggage collection was a breeze.

We rented a MPV to tour around the island. Cost us about RM125 a day. I enjoyed driving around the island, it's peaceful and the roads are flanked with forest on both sides. The road cut through paddy fields and some raods are just meters away from the sea.

If you're taking bus, you can choose to either stop at Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis. I'm not really familliar with Kuala Kedah so can't say much on that. Perhaps you can just check with any bus operators that include Kuala Kedah as their destinations.
Transnasional is one of the reliable bus operator in Malaysia. You can purchase tickets
at Hentian Duta, Jalan Duta, Off Persiaran Duta. Bus fare from KL to Kuala Perlis is RM27.90 for adult and RM13.90 for children. You can take the earliest bus that shoot off at 9.00 am or later at 10.00 n 10.30 pm. From KL to Kuala Perlis takes about 8 hours journey with a few stops along the way.
The bus will stop at Kuala Perlis Bus Terminal...which is next to the Kuala Perlis Jetty.
It's recommended that you take the night bus, either the 10.00 or 10.30 pm bus, since the journey will take about 8 hours so if you take the 10.00 pm bus...you'll reach Kuala Perlis around 6.00 am...n just on time take the first ferry to Langkawi.

The easiest n fastest way to get to Langkawi is of course by flight. The flight takes about 50-55 minutes from Kuala Lumpur. You can take MAS or Airasia from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
Return airfare by MAS would be from RM446 above (including tax). One way airfare by Airasia starts from RM99.99 to RM195.99 and above (exluding tax).

guys, take my advice ...travel to singapore, roam around for a day and take overnite train to KL, roam around for around 1/2 day and take the evening air asia flight from KL to langkawi. Flights to singapore/directly from ur destination to KL may be cheaper and then you can combine it with langkawi
we did a singapore-KL-langkawi round trip and it worked out cheap cuz we did singapore-KL by overnite train ...trains are neat and comfortable with wide soft sleepers and will only cost you 40 sing $ or 40 Rm depending on which way u r travelling. Check out KTMB site to get more info
