Keropok Lekor by muddybok I was first exposed to keropok lekor when I moved from Johor to Kuala Lumpur for my study. I was always wondering why keropok lekor was so dark & delicious, but now I found the answer. I also trace to the origin of keropok lekor which is evolved from keropok losong (originated from Kampung Losong, Trengganu) which has more content of fish than flours. You can find keropok lekor just any corners of east coast, with great concentration of keropok lekor stores along the federal road near Marang. Ingredients (found in the net) - 1 kg fish (ikan parang or ikan kembong) - 500g sago flour - Salt to taste - 125ml water - Some ice-cubes - 1 or 2 pandan leaves Leave a Comment

Istana Jahar by muddybok Istana Jahar was a gift from Sultan Mahmud II to his grandson, Long Kundur. The palace is known as the Museum of Royal Traditions and Customs, featuring Kelantan's cultural heritage. You will see exceptional standards of Kelantanese wood craftmanship, intricately carved wooden panels decorated the entire palace. The museum also featured Kelantanese traditional ceremonies and customs by loyal families. The museum opens Saturday through Thursdays, from 8:30am to 4:45pm and close on Friday Leave a Comment

Istana Entrance by muddybok This is one of the entrances to lstana Balai Besar. (don't know whether is front or the back?) The palace was built by Sultan Muhamad II to replace his riverside palace on the Kelantan river. Its now used solely as a venue for official state functions and inaugural ceremonies purposes. The town was named Kota Bharu (New Town) for the reason lstana Balai Besar was erected here and it was later became the state capital of Kelantan. Note that Istana Balai Besar does not open to public. That's the reason I only got the picture of this nice gate. Istana Balai Besar located diagonally to Istana Jahar; I don't think anyone can even miss not seeing it. Leave a Comment

Wayang Kulit by Designerartgirl Wayang kulit is still performed in Kota Bharu at the local cultural centre. The cultural centre is open on monday, wednesday and saturday from beginning of march til end of october. Entry is normally free. Check with the local tourist info for more details about shows. Songket by muddybok Kain Songket is a hand-woven traditional Malay fabric with gold and silver threads and worn mainly during official functions and ceremonies. Before the songket can be worn, it must go through several stages and it could take months to complete the fabric, not to mention a ready to be worn piece. Unlike batik printing, you do not take courses to make your own songket. It will be more feasible purchase one, even some ready made one. Silat, an elegant Malaysian dance form, originated as a deadly martial art. The weaponless form of self-defense stripped fighting to a bare minimum. Silat displays are common at weddings and other festivals; the dancer will perform sparring and beautiful routines to accompanying drums and other musical instruments. Leave a Comment

Rebana Ubi (giant gong) performance by mansionion As the cradle of the Malay culture, visit to Kota Baharu is incomplete without sampling some of its local culture and cultural performances. From traditional sports such as wau (giant kite-flying), gasing (top-spinning), silat (martial art), rebana ubi (giant gong), bird-singing competitions and the making of exquisite handicrafts such as batik, songket, silverware and mengkuang products, all can be found here in Kota Baharu and its vicinity, offering a glimpse of traditional Malay culture in truly spectacular setting. Though some form of the cultural performances (such as wayang kulit (shadow play) and mak yong) are banned by the state goverment due to contradicting with Islamic teaching, those available for public performances are still enjoyable enough to be watched. . Central Market. by Designerartgirl Central market in Kota Bharu is just one of those fantastic places which you need to visit if only to take a picture of all the colours of the market below. The different smells from the market is also something which makes it another reason to visit. Strong smelling spices, fresh vegetables and seafood (and other meats) all contribute to the fantastic aroma of the place. The market itself is a large round building, with lots of stalls all around. The middle is the vegetable section and all around is everything else, from spices, clothing, and tourist kitch... Leave a Comment

World War 2 Monument by mansionion Located within Padang Merdeka, the World War 2 Monument was erected as a remembrance to the WW2. It is aptly erected here as Kota Baharu is among the first place in then Malaya being invaded by the Japanese army during WW2. Padang Merdeka ("Independance Field") itself is a historical landmark in Kota Baharu. Formerly known as Padang Bank and Padang Kelupang, the field is a heritage of British colonial days - the Brits loved to build fields/squares like this all over the country as a central civic ground around which buildings were put up. Padang Merdeka has a similar concept and most of Kota Baharu's old buildings and historical landmarks are located around the field. Padang Merdeka is the place where Kelantan's independence fighter Tok Janggut was laid to rest after he was killed by British colonialists during the 1800s. It was also the place where the announcement of the country's independance was declared in Kota Baharu and hence its name was changed accordingly to reflect this event. I was drawn to this city after hearing some great reports on great photographic themes here (Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah). This is a covered market place, but having the same theme and atmosphere like some of those Pasar Tani in many part of Malaysia. You can find lots of colors in clustered manner, such as red chillis, green veggies, eggs, carrots, petai, chilli source, even turtle eggs which make up a very interesting photographic subject. You also notice sellers are patiently waiting for customers to check out their products and they don’t mind at all when my camera lens keep zooming in and out on their products and their expressions. Go there in the morning because by lunchtime the activities would have slowed down. Leave a Comment
