Monsoon season in Kelantan

by SLLiew

From November to February, it is generally the "monsoon" raining season in Kelantan. The winds from the northeast over the South China seas brings heavy rains.Rivers can overflow, town can inundated and roads can be closed or bridges can get washed away. So keep watch of the local news and if you are camping or driving, beware of falling trees or falling rocks or rising waters. There are regular evacuations in the low lying areas. It is part of annual life here so if you are a tourist, check with the locals. This time will be low tourist season and so there are some advantages too.

Sleek business women

by SLLiew

At Kota Bahru main market (pasar), observed all the stalls are run by women. Along the road, I bought some woven handicraft from another Kelantanese woman. She seemed so genuine and that it was her own handiwork that I did not bargain much and paid what I thought was a fair price. Later I found that I paid far too much more for similar items at a town shop. So do not underestimate the seller.

Watch out for elephants and cows

by SLLiew

When driving the East West highway from Gerik (Perak) to Jeli (Kelantan), I have seen hornbills flying over the forest canopy and traffic signs of looking out for cows or elephant crossings.Someone I know once hit a poor cow along this stretch. Just this week in the local papers, an elephant calf was found as a hit-and-run victim along the road side. So especially in the early morning or dusk, drive carefully and avoid hitting any elephants or cows. Damage to both parties will be substantial. Drive safe always

Do not buy or eat turtle eggs

by SLLiew

In the main market of Kota Bahru or at other markets and along the beach, you may see turtle eggs of different turtle species on sale or cooked as omelete as a dish. There is a natural curiosity to buy or try out. But please do not as this will encourage more illegal poaching of eggs and greatly endanger the survival of all turtle species which have declined drastically over the years. You can find alternatives like chicken, duck or qual eggs. Say no to turtle eggs.
